The famous ball

The history of the ball drop goes back to 1907 when it was inaugurated to welcome 1908. This ball is really extraordinary because it is a 2 foot geodesic sphere and it weighs 11,875 pounds. The surface of this ball is covered with 2,668 Waterford crystal triangles and is lit by LEDs. In addition to this, it has more than 16 million colors and more than a billion patterns to make it look dazzling. With so many arrays of patters, this ball will not fail to impress you one bit. The ball that is used now is the fifth edition and has had few changes from the ones that were used earlier.

Things to know

Visiting United States during Christmas can be really amazing and spending the night at Times Square on the New Year’s Eve will be even more amazing, but do remember to take plenty of warm clothing and sweaters. The cold will be bone chilling and there are possibilities of snow falls. Since you will stay outdoors for most of the evening, it would be wise to wear a lot of warm clothes if you do not want to spoil the night. With thousands of people gathered at the square, the experience will be heart warming, but the cold can get to you quite fast.

More from the square

At New Year’s Eve, Times Square is completely closed to traffic and it starts from late afternoon. You will find the square to be divided into various pens or viewing sections and you will be directed to the respective pen according to your arrival time. That is why it is always wise to arrive little early so you can catch the best view of the ball drop and all the fun and frolic.
