You have completed your new build and are ready to move in. Think about your first dinner, and many meals to come, think about holidays and family time you will spend together around the table in your newly built dream kitchen. Now you are going to need all your big essentials, like the range/stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, sink and faucet. Then add on small appliances, like a blender, mixer, toaster oven and microwave. Lastly, let's have some fun with kitchen tools and gadgets.

We don't normally think of decorating the kitchen the same way as other rooms in the home because kitchens seem more for functionality rather than design. Countertops and flooring are major players in kitchen decor that add personality and make a statement in the busiest room in the home. Accent lighting is also a great design element in the kitchen, as well as throw rugs for the floor, dishware/china, cookware, silverware, linens, and let's not forget tabletop decor! Design in the kitchen is fun because the items you choose to decorate with get used on a daily basis and are seen by everyone that visits your new home build.

Kitchen flooring ideas

Kitchen floors not only get a lot of foot traffic but also take a beating. Therefore, when choosing your kitchen flooring, consider what material will stand the test of time in your new home build. Ceramic tile is strong and beautiful, and comes in different sized tiles, and can also be heated. You can spice it up with grout coloring and different finishes (glazed or unglazed, semi-gloss or high gloss). If you find ceramic tile too cold or hard underfoot, you can try vinyl flooring.

Today's vinyl flooring is much more beautiful than the old, terribly colored vinyl from the 1950 we tend to think of when we hear the word vinyl. Nowadays, vinyl flooring can replicate hardwood floors and fool almost anyone. It's easy to clean, warm and soft on the feet, can even withstand pets and is a cheaper alternative to real hardwood.

If you can afford the higher cost of hardwood flooring, and aren't scared off by installing wood in a kitchen where water is present and spills tend to happen, we say go for it. Depending on the type of wood you choose, hardwood floors can scratch easily and do wear a bit more than ceramic or vinyl flooring...a price you have to pay for beauty. The look of hardwood can warm up a room and make it feel cozy. Wood floors come in different length and width planks and different color finishes.
