Things You Need to Know About IIFCO

by US Awasthi CEO & MD of IFFCO

Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited is a major cooperative society in India, also known as IFFCO. This is a multi-state society that is also involved in the manufacturing of fertilizers as well as in the business of marketing. This society has its headquarters in New Delhi. This organization has reached out to over 50 million farmers to date and still counting. The organization is prospering and expanding under its MD, Dr US Awasthi.

Awasthi has been an active participant in all the measures that IFFCO has taken till date. He has also taken a lot of initiatives to help transform the lives of Indian farmers for good. For more information on the achievements of Dr US Awasthi or about the measures he has taken, you can follow him on twitter or visit IFFCO’s official website. IFFCO has become a big name amongst other organisations in the same industry. Aiming towards the betterment of the Indian farmers, IFFCO has more than 36,000 member societies who are working together.

It was back in 1967 when IFFCO was started in India with the aim of producing and distributing better fertilisers to the Indian farmers. And since then, till date they have been improving and making things better in the agricultural sector of the country in every way possible. When IFFCO started expanding, it became an autonomous cooperative in India. Then, it was in the 2000s, when the general insurance arm, IFFCO Tokio was established, which also introduced rural-centric insurance products in the country.

Later on, as the years passed, IFFCO resumed their diversification and expansion plan. The expansion included acquiring more global ventures and more plants. But after analysis and some ground contact, Awasthi started a process of raising funds for farmers under “Kisan Sewa Fund”. This was done in the year 2001. After launching the fund, there were about 2000 houses that were built in Gujarat for earthquake victims. From then till now this fund is available and has been used in assisting with relief funding or with healthcare assistance for farmers. This fund is also actively used for assistance whenever farmers face any kind of natural calamities.

IFFCO does not just aim to bring betterment to the Indian society but has also made a great impact in other countries across the world. They have a joint venture with JIFCO in Jordan, IIFCO Canada, OMIFCO in Oman, KIT in Dubai, and ICS in Senegal. To make a better impact in these countries, IFFCO has extended their global partnership with strategic MoUs with a few fertiliser manufacturers as well as raw material suppliers. This helps them reach the local farmers in a better way.

Dr Awasthi also initiated a rural development programme where about 20 lakh INR was allocated to construct irrigation systems, solar energy units, roads, and for the provision of other needs of the civilians, such as electricity, computers, and other things in villages. They did all this for villages lying at a radius of up to 20 km from any IFFCO plant.
