THINGS YOU NEED TO DO DURING A POWER OUTAGE

by HNF Electric Electrical Contractor Columbus Indiana
There will be times when the electrical power in your area or community will go out unexpectedly. This is known as power outage. Disruptions in communication, water, and transportation systems are caused when the power goes off. Almost all retail businesses like grocery stores, gas stations, ATMs, banks, and other services get closed.
First of all, you should always be ready for a power outage. You would, therefore, be prepared for a situation like this when it occurs. Keep your flashlight, or candles & matches ready for use. This means it should not be the case that in case of emergency, you will have to worry about finding the batteries for flashlight or matchsticks to light the candles.
Whenever a power outtake takes place, keep the doors of freezers and refrigerator closed. Each time the door is opened, cold air is let out and the freezer is not re-cooled until the power comes back. Also, do not leave your freezer half-empty. The cooling hour is dropped from 48 hours to24 hours in case the fridge/freezer is half-full.
In case of a power outage, a generator is really helpful. But it should be kept outdoors and away from windows. The reason for this is that generators release toxic carbon monoxide which is a poisonous, odorless, and colorless gas. Also, ensure that the shelter for generator is not too small and is best if made of wood.
Also, it would seem a convenient option to hook up a portable generator to your home’s main panel or dryer outlet to backfeed your home. But, it is not safe. If anything goes wrong, you will not be the only one to suffer. The high voltage from the generator could result in fatal shock for the workers trying to fix the problem.
The next thing to keep in mind is to disconnect electrical appliances to avoid electrical surge damages. It’s always smart to unplug the devices from electrical sockets. However, it is recommended to leave on one light somewhere so that you are able to see light when the power comes back.
Don’t let your phone die. In case of a power outage, you cannot watch TV, or read books, or do anything for which light is required. Therefore, the most convenient option that remains to all of us is to use our phone. But the intelligent thing to do here is to put it down and save its battery. It is your only option when you need emergency services. If you can’t resist using your phone, make sure that you have a completely charged portable charger, in case you need it.
If you are on the streets, one of the most important things you need to remember during a power outage is that the nearest gas stations are out of gas. It would be smart enough for you to drive up an extra mile on the highway in a side road. You will find fuel readily available there. This is because everyone goes to the nearest gas station and that means the fuel will no longer be available there.
