Things to Do in Phoenix, Arizona
by David M. Shaw ArticleThe
winter is not made for the weak; the dry skin, lack of sunlight and
frigid cold can make the average person feel pent-up and frustrated.
If searching for a warm vacation spot during these cold months,
Phoenix is the ideal oasis. Established as a city in the late 1800s,
the area is lush with colorful western history, red deserts and even
an amazing cultural nightlife. Families will enjoy the many history
and art museums, while single adults can find an abundance of fun at
one of the casino resorts or performing arts centers. The subtropical
desert climate makes the weather (besides the summer months) ideal
for even the most sensitive of travelers; you’ll find yourself with
an insatiable desire to spend all day outside, basking in the
sunlight. Those who are unfamiliar with the area should take the time
to peruse the choices for things to do in the area, while finding a
five-star hotel near all of your top must-see locations. Phoenix has
a little bit of something for everyone, so much so that the hardest
part of your planning will be narrowing down exactly what to do
first.
Get
Outdoors
Phoenix
is home to some of the most beautiful deserts in the west, not to
mention the manmade and natural landmarks. One of which is the Desert
Botanical Garden, which is over 145 acres of plant displays. The park
is open daily and focuses on plants found in desert regions,
especially those found locally. Alternatively, you can remain outside
with your family as you visit the Phoenix Zoo. Housing over 1,200
animals from around the globe, the park features over 2.5 miles of
trails. For the more active outdoorsman, you may be surprised to find
out that Phoenix has some of the best golf courses in the U.S. Head
to the outskirts of town to Apache Junction to play a round at the
Gold Canyon Golf Resort, or just outside of Phoenix to Scottsdale for
a game at the Troon North Golf Club. Those who want to explore the
area on their own should make sure they visit Camelback Mountain with
amateur trails near the base and advanced trails at the summit for
the skilled hiker. Lastly, cool off while tubing on the Salt River in
the Tonto National Forest close to Mesa.
Get
Cultured
Spend
the day exploring the Phoenix Art Museum, as it houses more than
18,000 pieces of Western American, Asian and Latin American artwork,
amongst others. You can watch the sunset on Dobbin’s Point and
South Mountain, which is part of the Phoenix Mountain Reserves on
South Central Avenue. During the day you can hike the area, but at
night you can see the whole city from this one spot. Once the sun
sets, you can start your Thursday evening in Scottsdale for their
weekly ArtWalk on Main Street, where you can view and purchase works
from local artists. When you’re finished, grab a bite to eat at one
of the best local restaurants in the area: Centurion. Their seasonal
fare and desserts are out of this world. After dinner, take in some
of Phoenix
performing arts at the Herberger Theater Center. The
750-seat stage is located downtown and is home to the Arizona Theatre
Company. The talented and unique cast will truly entertain you.
Finish your night with a game of Blackjack and a nightcap at Casino
Arizona in Scottsdale.
