Things to do around Port Canaveral

by Sophia Butler Writer

Florida is well known for its attractions. It's a tourism hub for natural and man-made beauty. Most of the time people think of Orlando or Central Florida as the main place to station yourself and it's not a bad choice. Disney, Universal and Sea World are all housed in the Orlando area. However, for experienced Florida travel there's a place just south of there that opens up a veritable and literal, ocean of opportunity. That would be, beautiful Port Canaveral.

Port Canaveral is home to four of the most prolific cruise lines: Disney, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and Carnival Cruises end and begin right there in the namesake port. This means you can either start your vacation off with a cruise or possibly end it that way. However, that is simply scratching the surface of what there is to do around there.

For the nature lovers, there are several parks to the south. Like scenic Lori Wilson Park. It's a 32 acre beach park with a maritime hammock. With 1000 feet of board walk, three pavilions, a playground, grills and much more it's a great place to spend a quiet afternoon soaking up that famous Florida sun. You'll also see various forms of wildlife such as the songbirds, Painted Buntings, Scrub-jays and sea and shore birds of all kinds. On the eastern side of Canaveral you'll find Jetty Park. Probably the most well rounded park of the ones in the area, Jetty boasts of something very interesting. It has a 24 hour fishing dock. It's fully equipped with fish cleaning tables with running water. It is very well lit in case you'd like to get in some fishing after the sun goes down. They also have 126 campsites that range from the simplistic tent areas to the high tech RV hook ups.

For the more modern minded folk, there's Kennedy Space Center. This is an iconic part of Florida's history and culture. Located north of Port Canaveral, Kennedy Space Center provides hours of space related fun and education. For starters, you can tour the facility. They have different tours depending on how much you'd like to explore.  From the general bus tour, which is included in the admission price, to the various Up-Close tours, there's something for everyone to enjoy as you learn about the different aspects of space travel. They also have the Astronaut Training Experience. This half day activity puts you through the training of being an astronaut, what an experience! Complete with simulated shuttle ride and hands on exploratory exploits! For the little ones, there's the Angry Birds Space Encounter where you'll get to interact with everyone's favorite furious feathered friends. There's the 3D IMAX Theater showing in-depth and breathtaking views into space. You can even have lunch with an Astronaut. Kennedy Space Center is well worth the visit.

There's more to Port Canaveral than what's mentioned above. From Cocoa Beach, the Brevard Zoo, to the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse. There are all sorts of fun to be had in that area. So, whether you're about to set sail or have just come back from oceanic adventure, make sure and look around Port Canaveral. You'd be surprised at all there is!
