Things to Consider Before Installing a Balustrade

by Levi Barney Marketing Manager
When you think about the balustrade, you see it as an underrated and underutilized structure, right? However, if it is done right then it will add style and detail to your interior room and outdoor space. So, if you wish to install a balustrade then here are the things that you need to consider.

Have a look:

Strength

The aluminium balustrade is needed when there is a change in level between areas. Further, it also adds style and detail to your space too. For instance, installing balustrade to zone different areas of the garden.

But when someone sees a balustrade in situ or as an aesthetic addition, they assume one thing: it is strong enough to hold them. This means that when installing balustrades, they should be made from strong material and should be constructed in such a way that it can hold someone's weight when they lean on.

Consider installing inside or outside?

When it comes to design and construction there are many things that affect it. The same goes for the balustrades, it is not just about securing glass clamps and fixings, and materials for posts and infills, but it is also about height too!

The height of the exterior should be taller than the one installed inside the property. The interior height of the interior balustrade should be a minimum of 900mm and for the outside, it should be at least of 1100mm.

Secure fixing

It is not always the balustrade that can fail but the fixings that clamp the glass infills can. So, before installing glass or aluminium balustrade, you need to confident that:

  • There should be a secure base and wall to which a balustrade can be fixed to
  • And correct fixings and clamps are used

For instance, if you want to fix balustrade to a concrete base then you need slightly different fixings.

And when the one part of the system fails such as the clamps or screws work loose or a baluster gets damaged, the weight and the strength should automatically be spread out over the remainder of the structure.

In order to perfect fit, consider professional design as well as installation.

Material

One of the things that matter how well a baluster performs and looks depends on the materials. You may surprise to know this that balustrades can be made from anything providing that the material is able to withstand the weight and force on it without cracking, breaking or being damaged.

If you want to avoid such things, consider barrier load ability. That is because the load can be quick and forceful like a group of people hanging over a balcony. Or it can be ‘gentler’, such as one person grabbing on to it as they descend a staircase.

However, not all materials work the same under a heavy load or pressure and so paper balustrades don’t work! Although, you should opt for tempered glass, wood, concrete, and metal for the materials as it is most common and can be used individually or combined to create a safe and fantastic looking balustrade too.

Cleaning and maintenance

Lastly, you need to consider cleaning and maintenance from time to time.

However, some balustrade materials and designs are better at repelling dirt and stains when in use.

Glass

It is a great balustrade material but it is prone to finger marks and you need to be prepared to wipe it clean every time that happens with a glass cleaner and clean cloth.

Wood

When it comes to a wood balustrade, it doesn’t show many marks and stains, but it needs to re-varnish or re-paint.

Metal

Metal is great too but it comes with some problems as well. Metal is prone to fingerprints like glass and if you use it outdoors, there is a chance of rusting.
