Things No One Tells You About IPR Law Firms

Where there were only a handfull of big IPR law firms in India a couple of decades ago, the past decade has seen the emergence of several boutique law firms which cater to the niche area of intellectual property law. Also increasingly, these law firms are are not only providing legal services but also work as proponents of intellectual property rights by disseminating information about this field and educating the masses of the same.
In India, specifically, there is a great dearth of knowledge about intellectual property law across all sections of society. Of course, there is no doubt that the past few years have witnessed increase in the awareness concerning intellectual property law, however, a lot more can be done in this sphere in order to reach a stage where people do not use the terms copyright and trade marks interchangeably.
These law firms have been assigned the task to educate the layman about the concept of intellectual property, the rights which ensue, and the plethora of ways in which businesses can exploit their intellectual assets. They also have to raise awareness and elucidate upon those actions which are prohibited under the statute. Thus, they can justifiably be called the torch bearers of intellectual property law.
Another factor which bears mentioning is that most intellectual property law firms also operate in other fields of law. To elucidate, such boutique firms also tend to practice corporate, media and entertainment, and sports law albeit at a much smaller scale. Thus, it may seem from outside that these law firms are functioning in only one area of law but in fact they are practicing in other areas as well.
Further, intellectual property was previously not regarded as a mainstream area of practice – but this has changed today in response to the needs of businesses for whom IP assets are becoming more critical that physical assets. So one can expect that in the times ahead, the umber of IPR practitioners and law firms is set to increase.
Incidentally, most of the top IP firms in India are IPR law firms that are based out of Delhi.
