These are the travel trends for 2022
The end of 2021 is just around the corner, and that means we can start dreaming about all the travel we'll be doing in 2022. Don't have any plans yet? Then you might want to get inspired by the latest travel trends.
We've searched various travel agency websites for 2022 travel trends. What do we find? Like last year, sustainable travel will remain very popular in 2022 (and rightfully so!). Train travel, bike travel, hiking travel.... There's plenty of inspiration to plan an eco-friendly vacation. But besides eco-friendly travel, a number of other trends are expected in the world of travel. An overview.
Taking a vacation once in a lifetime
Over the past two years, we've been forced to cut back on our vacation plans. Now that we are allowed to travel without limits again, we realize that it really is now or never to take that dream trip. According to Amadeus, the Spanish tourism agency, many more special vacations will be booked in 2022. For example, the number of searches for Tanzania, where you can see the Big Five in the wild, has increased by 36% in recent months. Bookings for the Peruvian cities of Lima and Cusco, near Machu Pichu, even increased by almost 50%. So the message is clear: next year, be sure to hit number one on your bucket list.
Friendcations
Here's something else the pandemic has taught us: laughter and memories with the people you love are worth their weight in gold. The last few years would have been infinitely more difficult without Zoom, Microsoft Teams, FaceTime and WhatsApp. These apps have made us realize how valuable friends and family are and how important it is to stay in touch face-to-face. So it's no surprise that 2022 will be the year of big reunions, and where better to do that than abroad, right? In the UK, travel agents saw demand for large group travel increase by - wait for it - 600% (!!). Amadeus is also seeing significant interest in group travel: Searches for popular destinations for such trips have doubled in recent months, and trips to party destinations like Ibiza and Las Vegas are currently in high demand.
Finding filming locations
Another thing we've been doing a bit more than usual in the last two years is watching series and movies. And that can make you envious of actors who get to work in the most breathtaking locations. These series and movies are often full of vacation inspiration, and according to several trend watchers, we'll be using that inspiration to plan our trips next year. By the way, Netlfix recently published a study showing that Porthgwarra in Cornwall will receive 50% more tourists by 2020 due to the success of the series "Poldark". We want to go to Wye Valley ("Sex Education")!
Wellness Travel
According to Booking.com, when we go on vacation, we are especially in need of quiet travel and mindful moments. One of their surveys shows that 79% of all travelers confirm that travel is the best medicine for their mental and emotional well-being. So in 2022, we won't be traveling because we want to see Rome, Paris or Barcelona, but because we need time off for our mental health. Expedia adds that interest in Airbnb's and vacation homes with wellness options is surging. Booking ahead of time is key!
Local experiences
Because we want to travel more consciously in the future, many tourists also find it important to connect with local people and have local experiences. A study by Bookatrekking.com showed that more than half of all travelers think it is important that their vacation has a positive impact on the local community. More than 70% of all travelers say they only want experiences that are representative of the local culture.
