Thermal Spray- Various Applications And Uses Revealed
by Roy Durametal Welding and Thermal Spray IndustryToday technology has advanced to a huge extent that there are
some special type of coatings for buildings as well as for metal structures.
These are applied by using different spraying methods.
A similar type of technique is there that’s called Thermal
Spray. In this procedure a ceramic material, metal or alloy is melted and
after that it is sprayed. The main purpose of all this is to add a layer on
various things so as to change the surface properties of a substance. The extra
added layer is generally termed as a coating.
Quite often this kind of technique is confused with brazing
or welding. But in fact, this process differs from the two widely.
What are the common applications of Thermal Spray?
Let’s begin with some basic ones:
·
Wind
turbines- These usually get damaged due to atmospheric conditions and for this
reason, manufacturers use a special type of spray or coating in order to
protect the turbines from any kind of corrosion because of the environmental
conditions.
·
Bridges-
The bridges tolerate a huge traffic on the daily basis and thus these need some
effective metal spraying. It is helpful to extend the life of the structure.
For this a roller spray system is used.
·
Petro
Chemical Plants- In this area, a high maintenance budget is utilized just to
control the corrosion rates. For protecting things from this spraying of metal
is considered to be an ideal procedure for refineries, tanks and other steel
made parts.
·
Oil
industry- The structures like pipes and risers are often exposed to some of the
harsh elements and conditions. So, it can be beneficial to apply the thermal
sprayed material. It can protect things up to years.
·
LPG
cylinders- Metal spraying is usually used in LPG and propane gas cylinders for
protection. This is done by using arc spray procedure.
·
Architectural
coatings- There are different parts like support columns, balcony decks,
decorative windows, etc that are under corrosive effects of the environment.
Thus use of thermal coatings can be an ideal solution to prevent the risks of
distortion.
How to decide the type of material used for coatings?
Sometimes this technique of external coating is also known as
Hardfacing and in order to decide the type of material that should be
used, first the type of wear is very important to be understood.
The main types include abrasive and adhesive wear. The former
consists of the lower impact conditions. In this wear rates are more dramatic
as compared to the later one. The second one corresponds to material separation
between two interfacing surfaces. It generally begins with excessive rubbing of
the surfaces.
Now to make the choices, it is clear that for the first type of wear, harder material like ceramic coatings can be ideal and for the second one, softer stuff is useful. These coatings and sprays can be very effective to prevent the further damage and also enhances the life of the items.
