The last 10 to 15 years has highlighted how technology has improved at an exponential rate how people deal with the economy. The dawn of the Internet and social media has offered a lot of unprecedented manners which has allowed people who are complete strangers to business and commerce and production to enter the market. More and more people are diving into the small business world.

In contrast to a capitalist and industrialist past, people in our economy now can have access to almost anything: money, technology, and human capital. As individuals, these people are the true drivers of the economy. Business speaker and consultant Tara Gentile rightfully gives this concept a term: the You Economy.

Today's economy can also be considered open source, where the people as creators and consumers are the developers. Instead of a select few dictating rules to the masses, the people are exercising their right to say and involve themselves in what they want. These concepts of the 'You' and open source economy puts the potential of individuals, entrepreneurs or customers, into the spotlight.

The concept of an open source economy conceives yet another fact. Ideas, products, and services offered by entrepreneurs can be perceived differently by their customers. One customer could use this product or service differently from another. Hence, open source. Ideas and products which entreprenuers come up with should be held with an open palm. This essentially tells the people to make use of such products the way they want to: for making themselves better, for making the product better, or for turning the product into something that they need or want.  Once a service or product is out in the market, entrepreneurs are handing over part of the control over that product or service to the people. As part of one big open source economy, business owners and latent or actual customers must be aware of such process.

The Internet has paved way for a lot of small business owners to run their business on an international scale. Generating passive income has become relatively easy through the availability of online tools such as internet marketing podcasts. Freelancers have also taken a huge step. The career of being virtual assistants working as offshore secretaries is also becoming more popular. Truly, the availability of tools found on the internet such as podcasts and business blogs has made connections to the other side of the globe a lot easier. This brings forth a new set of guidelines for entrepreneurs and their customers alike.

The You Economy emphasizes the potential of each individual. Tara Gentile says that with responsibility and knowledge so easily distributed in large corporations and small businesses today, people just want a sense of accomplishment that comes from having responsibility over something. The You Economy, with all the changes brought forth by open source technology, imparts itself to let people find personal fulfillment in their businesses and careers.
