Rituals such as Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur involve blowing of the shofar. Shofars blowing are even extensively prevalent in several customs that are held at synagogues.

But when you have a shofar, you need to maintain it so that it looks good and lasts longer as well. You might wonder how you can maintain it, right? Well, don’t worry about it because we have given the best maintenance tips here.

How to maintain the shofar:

As they are made of animal matter, so the shofars need a great deal of maintenance. You need to dip the shofar in a diluted bleaching solution for a week. But before you dip it into the solution, don’t forget to stuff both the horn’s end with rags or cotton wool. The bleaching procedure is important since it would ensure the removal of animal matter. In case any animal matters remain, then an unpleasant odor will come out from your shofar. You have to shake the solution for being certain that the solution works pretty well.

After the completion of the cleaning procedure, you need to take it out from the bleaching solution. But don’t panic if you get the smell of bleach for a month. You can minimize the smell by rinsing your shofar thoroughly in running water. After rinsing it, wipe it dry.

Before the days of Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah, clean your Rams Horn Shofar with warm water. This helps in removing the bad smell, which may still surround your horn. You need to take special care after blowing your horn as well because when you blow the horn, your mouth’s saliva would get accumulated inside the horn. And the bacteria found in your saliva would interact with animal matter and might cause an unpleasant smell. So, spray odor neutralizer inside the horn. The spray would eliminate the smell. Keep your horn inside velvet wraps. This ensures your shofar would stay fine and also ready for the next time.
