The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Perfect Competition Suit

by Competition Suit shop Competition Suit Shop

Hi Guys, today we’re gonna be specifically talking about picking your show day bikini! I feel like for the athletes in us, it’s very easy to get caught up in prep life and forget the glamorous or the pageantry side of the show, and be that best presentable version of ourselves on stage!

For me personally, my hair is always in a bun, I’m wearing no make-up because I’m always sweating it out at the gym, in hoodies, and let’s face it just disheveled! It’s our cocoon stage, and we’re all just prepping to blossom into that glamorous butterfly on stage, so it’s definitely worth it!

So I’m going to assume that you’ve already decided to compete (obviously!) and your prep is well underway. But you have no idea what to do on show day (which is another beast to tackle, and we’ll explore it in detail in our next blog so stay tuned!) and what competition bikini to go for.

It can seem like such a big decision, especially for first-time competitors, with so many choices out there. So I’m writing this as a basic guide to help anyone who has no idea where to start looking for these glamorized crystal competition bikinis.

There are so many different brands, colors, and crystal options to consider, in addition to understanding when to order and most importantly how to get the right competition bikini for you (which, long story short, is opting for a custom-made bikini). It’s definitely a complete 360 in terms of mindset, switching from your gym and diet grind in prep to focusing on the glamor in getting your competition bikini made in time for your show date.

But, it is also the most fun part of competing, so I want you all to enjoy this process. After all it’s what you are all working towards - being absolutely gorgeous and strong on show day!

Picking your Competition Bikini

Obviously if you’re already interested in the industry, or in the middle of prep, you will have seen photos online of actual competitors on stage. The competition bikinis worn are very bedazzled to say the least. They’re usually covered top to bottom in crystals of some sort. That’s the basics.

Federation

What you have to consider first is the federation you’re competing in. Today we’re going to focus on NPC and the IFBB Pro League. We’ll do a separate blog for WBFF competition bikinis and divisions so stay tuned!

NPC and IFBB Pro League competition bikini requirement, are the opposite of WBFF (where it’s all about extra accessories, like full on pageantry with angel wings, bells etc). Simply put, they want the jewels glued onto you, i.e. minimal accessories, the crystals are there to highlight, compliment and accentuate your physique. They’re looking for sparkles and for you to look radiant and stand out under stage flood lights. And the only way to get that is to opt for a Grade-A crystal suit, as opposed to a second-hand, used, and plain or subpar competition bikini.

Divisions

The only difference in NPC is the cut depending on division. There are three main divisions (Bikini, Wellness, and figure/physique). For the Bikini division (which is the most popular division) you will wear a very classic bikini - triangle top, thong bottom, high cut. For Wellness, although it’s not a rule, you can do a triangle cut, but a lot of girls opt for a molded bra.

The molded cup has a push up support, which is great for those who do no have implants, to give it a fuller look on stage (Pro Tip! Get extra padding to help get a fuller look on stage, especially if you’re going for triangle top). You are going to reduce cup size as you get leaner during prep as well.

For Figure or Physique divisions, the competition bikinis are technically very different from Bikini and Wellness. It is technically a one-piece because it connects at the back with a crisscross pattern across the back.

So that’s step one done! Once you know your division, you know that your bikini can only vary so much from that basic look.

Custom-Made, Off-The-Rack or Rent?

Alright so you now know what style to get, now where do you go, what do you do, what’s the price like? So you have a few options, and number one is purchasing, and that can either be from a bikini company, as in getting a fully custom bikini. You pick the color, the crystals, the cut, and they make it perfectly to your body, with the measurements you send in.

This takes the longest and is the most expensive but obviously the best choice in terms of fit, because it’s tailor made for you. The second option is still to purchase one, but a pre-made one (think off-the rack SML sizes) from competition bikini brands. That’s a little bit less expensive and is a good option if you’re on a time constraint.

The third choice is to rent a competition suit, which is pretty much self-explanatory. The pro of this is again if you’re pressed on time and are on a constrained budget, it’s the most cost-effective and time-effective option. The downside is the suit fitting, and you won’t own a suit - which is nice memorabilia to have even if you’re only competing once.

So what is the right choice for you? It totally depends on what you’re looking to gain out of your venture into this sport. If you know for sure it’s one time done and dusted adventure, then you’re better off renting a suit. If you’re going undecided, then get a custom-made one, and if you know that you’ve discovered a new passion then you definitely should invest in getting the perfect fitting competition bikini that has been custom tailored to your size, style and color!
