The Trekker's Friend hiking trailer

by Christopher Lowe Inventor
The Trekker's Friend hiking trailer is a new type of device that is designed to be carried when the way is too rough/narrow/steep/crowded for wheels, and wheeled the rest of the time.  The hiking trailer itself is very lightweight and highly portable, and you can convert between carrying your backpack and wheeling it in around one minute.

Research done by the inventor of this hiking trailer has revealed that transporting your backpack on a hiking trailer rather than carrying it saves you energy while at the same time allowing you to walk faster.  This is contrary to what normally happens - walking faster with a load normally consumes more energy than working more slowly.

However, this effect only occurs on reasonably smooth and level paths.  If you imagine dragging any walking trailer with a heavy backpack attached on a very rough, steep or overgrown track, or up stairs, or where there is no track at all, it is easy to see that, while you might be able to do those things, it would be easier to carry your backpack in those places.  Almost any walking trip you go on will include some areas like this, that will be very difficult to traverse with a normal walking trailer.

The Trekker's Friend hiking trailer was invented to get around this problem.  It does this by being lightweight and quickly and easily switched between carrying and wheeling.  This makes it very suitable for long distance walks such as the Camino de Santiago or the Australian Alpine Walking Track, and many others.
