In 1888 and 1889 Dunlop got patent rights for his work and started his Dunlop Pneumatic Tyre Company with many Dublin businessmen.

His first tyre factory was inaugurated in Dublin from where the bicycles tyres were sold and the same work was performed in 1890 during Christmas time in the United States. Thereafter, his company’s products were sold in the US, Western Europe and Canada.

The discoverers:

Since the requirement was heavy and the Dublin factory suffocated to meet out the demands of tyres for bicycles, the production unit moved to Dunlop Tyres Coventry in the year 1898. After four years the building “Fort Dunlop” contained all of its offices along with its modern factory for tyres. In 20,000 hectares area, Dunlop invested in his rubber plantation in 1910. In Japan, a new factory was started soon after three years.

After making some innovations John Dunlop passed away and the company’s engineers utilized textile cord and steel bead wires in the tyre production that simultaneously disturbed the strength of the cycles. To prevent the air loss in case of rubber damage, a tubeless tyre with self-sealing layer was introduced by the company in the year 1948.

Dunlop had an excellent march fast in the 1650s along with its competitors Michelin and Goodyear. The company’s very first problem was experienced by having cheaper textile radial tyres in place of steel-belted tyres. Dunlop faced huge losses even after acquiring shares from an Italian manufacturer and finally in 1981 the company was parted. Finally, Dunlop sat on the edges of bankruptcy.

The Sumitomo, a Japan trading company rescued the company from downfall since it had its branch in Japan. That’s how the similar idea of opening branches in various continents was started.
