India is a land of festivals and festivities. Here, the fun never ends and the joy never comes to a halt as festivals and occasions for celebration keep following one after the other, round the year. No matter how harsh and hostile the climate or situation is, Indians sure know how to feel at home.

The Festival of rakhi is celebrated on the Hindu month of Sravan, which seems to co-inside with August in the English calendar. The festival celebrates the eternal love between a brother and sister. The term Rakshbandhan is derived from a Sanskrit word, which literally means, the bond of protection. The brother agrees to protect his sister from all kind of harm and guide her on the right path.  The festival teaches, that irrespective of our background, we can all live in harmony.

There are many legends which are associated withthis festival of rakhi. The latest one dates back to the times of the Raj put kings, when Bahadur Shah attacked Kingdom of Chittaur. Rani Karnavati had sent a Rakhi to Humayun, asking him to protect her. Hamayun is believed to have accepted the letter, but by the time he reached, it was all too late.

The second story goes back to the time of the Mahabharata, when Draupadi had tied a piece of her Saree on a bleeding Krishna’s hand to stop the bleeding. Krishna on the other hand vowed to protect her, during any misfortune, which he eventually did.

There are two other stories that connect the wife of Alexander - The Great to that of the Indian King Porus and the other one is between GoddessLakshmi and King Bali. The authenticity of these stories are highly debatable, but the message, which they convey are very significant and meaningful.

The main aim of any festival is to relive the tradition of our forefather and pass it on to our next generation. Previously we had to rely on age old postal and courier services to get our rakhi’s delivered to our near and dear ones, which was very unpredictable and unreliable in nature. However, now with online rakhi delivery system, one can experience complete freedom regarding rakhi delivery in India.

Traditionally simple Zari and silk rakhis were used to celebrate the occasion. However, with changing times and situations, the story has changed greatly. Fromoriginal gold and silver rakhis to rakhis made from sandalwood, rudraksh and Kundan are highly in demand.
