Composition

This reaction disrupts the conjugated system in the chromophore, resulting in a loss of absorption of specific wavelengths of light and thus fading the color.

Environmental Considerations: 

Sodium perborate is a preferred bleaching agent in many applications due to its environmental advantages. When compared to chlorine-based bleaching agents, such as chlorine bleach (sodium hypochlorite), sodium perborate has a milder impact on the environment. 

Sodium perborate decomposes into water, oxygen, and borate, which are less harmful than the byproducts of chlorine bleaching. 

Temperature and PH Dependence:

The bleaching efficiency of sodium perborate is influenced by temperature and pH. Higher temperatures accelerate the hydrolysis reaction, leading to increased hydrogen peroxide release and faster bleaching. Additionally, sodium perborate is the most effective at alkaline pH values, typically around pH 9-10, which enhances the stability and reactivity of hydrogen peroxide.

It is worth noting that while sodium perborate is an effective bleaching agent, it is not suitable for all types of stains or fabrics. It works best on organic stains, such as coffee, tea, wine, and blood.
