Every culture in the world probably has its own set of superstitious beliefs, and every culture also has its own way of countering these superstitions. Some are using charms and talismans, but have you ever heard of the evil eye beads?  It is a symbol of a pair of eyes worked upon a bead that is regarded as an effective amulet to protect the wearer from evil forces.  This tradition started in Turkey and Greece, but is now being practiced in many parts of the world including the Hindu, Jewish, Islamic, Buddhist, and Christian cultures.

The evil eye bead, actually, is an amalgamation of molten glass, copper, iron, salt and water. This metals and minerals combination is believed to offer protection from evil forces.  Today, this bead can be made of glass only.  This bead is referred to by the Turks as Nazar Boncugu, (sometimes Nazar Boncuk), which literally means “evil eye beads), and are believe to be carrying magical powers to safeguard you from harm and bring you luck. Bad energy that comes from evil eyes of some people is absorbed by these beads, so these are redirected from the wearer towards the world.

Evil eye beads, when used in crafting jewelry such as necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings, or anklets are worn by people who want to get protection from envious eyes.  It was believed in the past that when you are praised for your good fortune by someone, even if it is well meaning, have a bit of some jealousy and greed, so bad luck is sure to befall on you.  So, even for a newborn baby, parents pin an evil eye bead on his/her clothing to ward off evil spirits.  Animals like horses are also given this bead to be hung on their necks, as well as the doors of homes.

This tradition can still be found being practiced in Turkey and several other countries. The evil eye beads that glimmer are handmade by glass artisans using primitive methods are now being made available for people of the world.  The image of the eyes is set in a blue color background. As already mentioned these beads are made of glass material, but you can find some beads made of other materials like Lucite, common stone, or agate.  In the Middle East, the color blue is symbolic of prosperity and water, which is very precious for these people.  Red is the next favorite evil eye beads color because it represents luck and good fortune as well.

Evil eye beads are crafted into fashion accessories and worn by people for good luck as well.  If you make a quick search on the internet, you’ll find that these beads are sold as necklaces, bracelets, pendants, etc.  The online sites allow you to easily locate genuine and antique evil eye beads as well as those that have just been produced. You can find them in an assortment of sizes and styles that will complement your wardrobe. This diversity of beads on the online shops makes the evil eye within reach by consumers in whatever location they may be.
