The Past and Present of Cornices

by Janny Moore cornice

As soon as one comes across the word cornice, the first thing that he/she will think about is a beautifully crafted old building. Cornices go back to the 18th century and the concept is such that it is popular even today. Are you still wondering what a cornice is? Well, they are horizontal decoration or mouldings that are installed on windows, doors and roofs. A big reason why cornices are used in houses or buildings is because it helps prevent rain water from hitting the walls directly. When there is too much rain water seeped into the outer walls, chances of the walls getting discolored easily increases.

Creating cornices

Back in the 1800s, cornices were created in two different methods. The first method was easy enough and the second was slightly complicated. A modern cornice manufacturer does not follow the methods that were followed in the ancient past. Tools and equipments have changed and so has the technology. Nowadays, manufacturers do not have to put in so much of labor because of the advanced machineries. In the recent times, moulds are made very intricately. Later, concrete is poured in so that the whole process comes to an end and the cornice is complete. This process has benefited the manufacturers because mass production could be made.

Final touches

Before a cornice is delivered to the cornice supplier, the final product is given a finishing touch by sanding it down. This, in turn made the finished product look very beautiful and the design that was created could be understood quite prominently.

High usage

Just like the old times, the demand for cornices is ever increasing. Houses and buildings in Europe have used this concept more than any other country. In most of the buildings there, you will notice unique designs being incorporated on cornices. Sculptors and masons have come up with new and innovative designs and they have implemented those designs to reconstruct old buildings.
