The Most Common Carpet Repair Projects and How to Prevent Them

by Martin Moran Project Management Consultant

Wouldn't it be nice to think that a club soda or the sprinkle cleaning solution from your local store could take care of every carpet burn or stain? In reality, there are a number of instances where the damaged carpet will just need to be removed and replaced. Fortunately for us, even irreparable carpet damage doesn't doom the entire carpet installation in your home. Qualified carpet repair professionals have made an art out of replacing sections of the carpets and prolonging their lifespan.

What Exactly is Carpet Re-stretching

Getting your carpet re-stretched isn't the most difficult home improvement project, but it's typically more than the average homeowner wants to deal with. Of course, all furniture have to be removed and the carpet have to be detached from the baseboards grips, stretched in both directions, cut in length and re-fastened. Actually, the process is similar to a new carpet installation. Re-stretching your carpet will prolong its lifespan, increase its performance and safety. When you're not sure if your carpet needs repair, go to the middle of the room and pull the carpet up from the ground. If it doesn't immediately tightly spring back to place, it's probably time to call the repairman.

When Do You Need a "Cut and Plug" Technique

Some specific carpet damages, such as burns and stains must be removed and replaced with a new section of the carpet. It's true that many places can't be practically covered with a creative rearrangement of your furniture. Even residents who initially followed this approach, usually want a more permanent fix somewhere down the line. So, your best solution will be to have some spare carpet from your initial installation. Otherwise, you just have to find something that's reasonably identical.

Carpet Repair Average Cost

Like many other inexpensive installations, your carpets may need frequent repairs, especially if they've served you five years or more. The good news is that these repairs don't cost as much as repairing something like a hardwood floor. The information that I have for Atlanta metro area is an average of $100 - $400 for a carpet repair, depending of course on the size and nature of your carpet repair. Major carpet manufacturers recommend annual deep carpet cleaning, weekly thorough vacuuming and prompt stain treatment in order to reduce the number of carpet repairs, extending your carpet's life and keeping its texture and colors.

What is The Project Length of a Carpet Repair

No matter the size of the home improvement project, almost all homeowners are concerned with its length. Be it four weeks for a full bathroom remodel or a single day for carpet repair, residents want their homes looking perfect. Fortunately, no carpet repair project takes too long to be finished. As long as you're able to provide an accurate description of the carpet damage, it shouldn't take longer than a few hours to make the repair. Also, keep in mind that some small repair projects can be performed even by your regular carpet cleaning contractor, so speak with them to bring all necessary equipment and do a full carpet maintenance with one visit.
