Step by step instructions for making a lingerie

1.Get your stats right

First of all take measurements of your body. Every project that you will execute will entail these measurements for the perfect fit. Refer to the pieces you will be stitching and then work out the measurements based on that. It is important to include dimensions like waist, high hip, bust, high bust, under bust, fullest hip, shoulder to waist, sleeve length, shoulder width, back waist length, shoulder to bust point etc. The measures should be taken while standing in front of the mirror for the right leveling of the tape.

2.Crotch measurement

If you are designing a custom panty then it’s really important to take some additional measurements like the crotch depth. This measurement can be taken by sitting over a counter or tabletop and noting the distance between the waistband and the flat surface.

3.Stretchable materials

Patterns need to be adjusted for stretch. It is stretch ability that decides the actual size of the pattern. For fabrics like Lycra-blends you can take patterns which are slightly small than your actual size for the perfect fit. If you opt for a commercial pattern then it’s very important to know about the kind of fabric that will suit the design.

4.Pattern Creation

Use something that you have in your mind for a creative look. If you are planning to make a replica of some garment that you already have then this will save you from the trouble of taking several measurements before you hit the right design. You can also improve the design by adding certain exceptional features to it or adjust the size as per your demand.

5. Copying the design

Copy the design of your favorite lingerie by cutting out pieces of the undergarment. Cut the front side for the crotch portion and the seam between the front and the back. Fold the pieces in half and then place the panty pieces on a piece of paper so as to trace the pattern. Trace the panty segment with ¼ inch of seam allowance and 5/8 inch seam allowance around the hips. After cutting the intended fabric, iron the pieces and compare the pattern pieces for accuracy. Decide as to which fabric you are willing to use. Pin the cut fabric together and iron the pieces for best results.

6. The last task- Sewing& stitching

Finish off by sewing the pieces together for the final result. For slippery, pin or stretchy fabrics one needs to stitch the pieces together.
