The Lawrence School in Waukesha
The Lawrence School
is a state-licensed premiere child-care facility in Saylesville Road in
Waukesha, WI. It offers child care programs for children ages 6 weeks
to 12 years old, as well as 4K classes in collaboration with the
Waukesha School District.
History of Lawrence School
It
began in 1852 as a one classroom structure in Saylesville Road, a 3
mile distance from the village of Waukesha. It was built on a land
which George and Mary Lawrence deeded to the Waukesha School Board for
the purpose of putting up a school. The school grew as more and more
farms sprouted up around the school area, resulting in an increased
number of children attending classes. During the Great Depression, the
school was rebuilt with a brick building rising on its site. This new
school housed five classrooms and a basement. It opened its doors in
1931 and continued serving the Waukesha children until 1976, when it
closed down and remained unused for 8 years. In 1984, it was bought by
the Pro health Care and renovated into a residential health center. It
closed its doors again in 2009 and in 2013, the Lawrence School was
rebuilt. Its current owner, Jim Hoeft, took on the project of rebuilding
the school. Having lived in Waukesha his entire life, he saw the
opportunity of making a difference in their community by restoring the
Lawrence Center into its original purpose. He was awarded with the
project in May 2013, and started rebuilding at once. The plan was to
open the center in August of the same year, but the remodeling took a
longer time and it was not until August of 2014 that Waukesha Preschool formally opened again.
