Neural tube defects occur during the very early stages of pregnancy, and can cause deformities such as spina bifida.
Another vitamin you need to make sure is included in your prenatal supplement is iron. Iron must be taken during pregnancy to ensure fetal health. Your body needs twice the amount of iron you usually ingest when you are not pregnant, in order to make hemoglobin and red blood cells. Your baby needs blood for their growing circulatory system, and you need to make sure that your blood cells are healthy so they can carry oxygen to your tissues and the baby’s tissues as well.
Besides iron and folic acid, prenatal vitamins need to contain vitamin D and calcium. Both vitamin D and calcium are needed by pregnant women as well as nursing mothers. Your baby will need a lot of calcium to facilitate bone growth and development. If you don’t take calcium, the baby will use calcium from your body, which may cause problems for you later in life, such as osteoporosis.
