The Influence of Baby Boomers in Cruising

by Kosher River Cruise Kosher Tour Operator
A popular stereotype in the cruise community is that most passengers are old people. It is not invalid at all — according to CNBC News, the “Baby Boomer” generation still remains the largest cruise demographic. In the United States alone, an average of 10,000 boomers are retiring each day. Many of them have already planned their cruise beforehand.

Even when joining kosher touring cruises, one will find that many of their fellow Jewish guests are entering the age of retirement. Some of which are already past it.

It’s no surprise that this generation has significantly shaped how many modern cruises operate.

So why are baby boomers such avid cruise-goers?

The Luxury of Time and Money

The freedom to spend one’s time and budget for leisure is one of the biggest advantages of this generation. Very few in the Generation X and millennial groups can boast this.

Boomers no longer have to work regular jobs and look forward to holidays. Not only that, their children are probably adults by now.

Cruises come easy for boomers who have managed their finances wisely back in their day. Otherwise, it will take them some more time before they can book a cruise to celebrate their retirement.

Experiences over Material Objects

During a recent conference by the Cruise Lines International Association, Dan Hanrahan emphasized a fact. The renowned businessman stated that baby boomers would rather spend money on new experiences. To them, the memories they gain on doing and learning new things are more valuable than buying souvenirs and other material things.

Being that boomers are entering their twilight years, it’s understandable that they want to do as many things as they can. They have a limited time window but a lot of money to spend.

One thing that is noted among this group, however, is that they also value comfort while on excursions. While they may forgo riding on tour buses in favor of kayaking or jungle trekking, they will want their adventures to be on the safe side. Boomers want to have fun, but they want that fun to come with little to no risks at all.

How Their Preferences Have Influenced Marketing

From this, it can be easy to see why many adult-oriented cruises promote their excursions and amenities in a certain way. Most ads would say “We offer comfort, convenience, and adventures”.

Kosher touring cruise attracts guests by highlighting not only Jewish heritage sites. They also showcase kosher cuisine, onboard synagogues, and also their amenities.

In The End, Cruises Are Still For All Age Groups

Although many travelers will still find that cruises have a lot of senior passengers on them, they will also discover that there are more and more younger cruise guests aboard.

Millennials are now the world’s biggest demographic. Cruise lines have now seen how important they really are. More trips now cater to families and young adults while offering more exciting activities and amenities with short travel time.
