The Increasing Value of the Internet of Things

by Chausiko Sow webmaster

Today is the digital universe. For the next decade, we will be expanding by 40%, counting not only the increasing number of people and enterprises online but also almost everything related to our life. It is impossible to search online nowadays and not get answers.

The Internet of things refer to things answerable by Who, Where, When, What, Why and How. Like the physical universe which spans to depths unknown, the internet also has digit bits almost as many as the stars. It is expected to double in the next 5 years. And like the physical universe, the internet of things is diverse with billions of people interested in billions of things and shares it to others. However, unlike the physical world, the internet is made up of data which are all created by humans and is made up of software. It is, therefore, a man-made construct.

The internet of things is made with software that can create opportunities and create more values on everyday life.

As more of the world goes online, there are more opportunities created for enterprises, entrepreneurs and businesses as there is increasing data coverage. Third platform is used for computing, mobility, social networking and Big Data.

However, in order for these opportunities to be maximized it needs certain imperatives created by Information Technology organizations and internet operators.

The United States of America, United Kingdom, Japan, China and Korea are already ahead when it comes to proper utilization of the internet. These countries’ information centers, security and protection, virtualized data centers and data logistics and analytics have advanced as more data are driven in their own bandwidth. Protection against scams and online fraudulence are developed through the creation of their own systems.

Developing countries are continuously adapting what these leading countries are developing but in an effort to create their own part in history, they are safely creating their own steam.

Take for instance the development of internet providers in Indonesia. The archipelagic demography of the country has posed a challenge for them but with the proper allocation of internet sharing, they are able to provide service from Jakarta to the most unknown parts of the region. Operators also started their trend of selling network towers in order to distribute signals evenly. This trend has been opted even of one of the Big Three, XL Axiata when it sold 14,000 of its towers to PT Solusi Petronas last December. The company is also known to purchase one of the leading mobile data operators, Axis Capital Group as one of their basic strategies to cover more grounds. Data flow is now increasing in the country by the minute.

Together, these technologies and processes can slowly change the hidebound structure of today’s data stores to more egalitarian and flexible stores for tomorrow, which some vendors call “data lakes.”
