Emissions of CO2 and methane from wetlands and thawing permafrost because the climate warms could cut the “carbon budget” for your Paris Agreement temperature limits by around 5 years, a brand new study says.
These natural processes are “positive feedbacks” - so named simply because they release more greenhouse gases as global temperatures rise, thus reinforcing the warming. They may have previously not been represented in carbon budget estimates because they are not contained in most climate models, they say.
The findings claim that human-caused emissions will have to be cut by an extra 20% to be able to satisfy the Paris Agreement’s 1.5C or 2C limits, they estimate.
‘Engines for turning CO2 into methane’

The brand new study, published by nature Geoscience, aims to fill that gap. It concentrates on two processes around the land surface: thawing permafrost and natural wetlands.
They are both positive feedbacks for your climate because, because they react to rising temperatures, they result in the discharge of more greenhouse gases in to the atmosphere.
