"The Hundred Dresses" is the second production in Flint Youth Theatre’s 2012-2013 Signature Series
"The Hundred Dresses" is the second production in Flint Youth Theatre’s 2012-2013 Signature Series and is onstage from Oct. 19 - Nov. 4.
"The La Femme Dresses On Sale ," by Mary Hall Surface, is based on the Newbery Honor Book by Eleanor Estes. It tells the story of Maddie, who despite having more in common with a less popular girl, chooses to join with another group when they tease her. When the bullying escalates, Maddie braves the scorn of her classmates and stands up to them, making an unlikely friend in the process.
"The topic is certainly something that’s on a lot of people’s mind right now. Bullying is something that a lot of young people are struggling with, increasingly in our digital age. It’s becoming a greater and greater problem," said Jermey Winchester, executive artistic director for Flint Youth Theatre, who is directing the play.
What's interesting, he added, was that although the story focuses on a topic we hear about a lot in the news today, the story was written in the 1940 and set in 1938s.
"It sheds light on just how long it’s been a problem for people," Winchester said. "By looking at it through a slightly different lens we hope to show a new light on the topic."
Winchester said FYT partnered with the Michigan Youth Violence Prevention Center "in exploring this both timely and timeless struggle."
