The first signs of pregnancy

by james j. pregnancy diet

What are the first signs of pregnancy?
Many women suspect their pregnancy long before they take a pregnancy test. Some may call it intuition, for some women the feeling that their great desire for pregnancy will finally come true.
Delayed menstruation, a positive pregnancy test and a visit to a gynecologist are the only ways to confirm pregnancy with confidence. However, the first signs of pregnancy may appear before menstruation is missed.

So how to know pregnancy without a test?
Once the egg is fertilized, your body begins to produce hormones that slowly begin to change your body, both physically and mentally. Therefore, it is enough to perceive your body and you can detect pregnancy even before delayed menstruation. Some pregnancy symptoms may be the same as premenstrual ones, so women often do not pay much attention to them. Each pregnancy is very individual and takes place differently, so there are known cases where the pregnancy can take place completely without symptoms.

When do the first symptoms of pregnancy appear?

Early symptoms of pregnancy can usually be observed between 10-14 days after fertilization of the egg, ie a few days before the expected menstruation.

Morning sickness

More than two-thirds of future mothers will experience pregnancy morning sickness in the first trimester. A woman may observe morning sickness and loss of appetite and abdominal pain before missing menstruation. Anorexia is affected by the hormone Choriogonadotropin , which is formed after the egg is laid . This hormone can be detected from the blood on the seventh day after conception. Some women may also suffer from vomiting , which most often occurs in the morning, but stomach problems can also occur in the afternoon or early evening. In the second trimester, anorexia usually subsides.

What do doctors advise on early nausea?
Leave a croissant, biscuits or favorite crackers by your bed and eat them as soon as you wake up . Your blood sugar level will rise before you get out of bed. It is recommended to eat regularly in smaller doses and to omit spicy and fatty foods from your diet.

Dislike of food

In addition to nausea and the feeling that your stomach is on the water, expectant mothers can also suffer from anorexia. Don't like your favorite food? On the contrary, would you like something special? Cucumbers with plum jam? Even unusual tastes can be the primary symptom of a baby's expectation.Hypersensitive smell

Do you like certain scents of flowers, food and perfumes? What you smelled before may be completely different during pregnancy . According to studies, up to two thirds of pregnant women in pregnancy have different odors than before conception. Some mothers reported that they had such a sensitive sense of smell at the beginning of their pregnancy that they noticed any faint odor they would not have smelled before. The reason for the change in smell is the rapidly rising level of the hormone estrogen and the increasing volume of blood in the body of a pregnant woman.

Chest pain

For several days after fertilization, expectant mothers may experience tingling, tension and increased breast tenderness . After fertilizing the egg, the future mother's body is flooded with the hormones hCG and progesterone . Breast pain during pregnancy is responsible for the enlarged and growing mammary glands that are preparing for breastfeeding.
Nipple pain and darkening can determine the beginning of a new life. The color of the nipples is affected by hormones called melanocytes. Women with lighter skin most often notice changes in the color of their nipples; in women with darker skin, this change is noticeable around 10 weeks of pregnancy. Breasts are supplied with colostrum during pregnancywhich form a few weeks before the planned birth. Breast growth in most expectant mothers stops about a week to two after giving birth.

Fatigue

Unusual fatigue is one of the main symptoms of pregnancy in the first days after fertilization that afflicts women . In most cases, however, women often attribute this symptom to illness or, for example, a high workload. Pregnancy fatigue can occur after the first week of pregnancy. New life begins to grow in a woman's body and the production of progesterone increases significantly. This hormone helps in the development of the mammary gland, increases the amount of mucus in the cervix and suppresses premature contractions, which helps maintain pregnancy. But this hormone also causes the great fatigue that most expectant mothers will experience at the beginning of pregnancy. There is no point in fighting fatigue, treat yourself to rest, get enough sleep and also quality food . The initial fatigue will subside over time, in the second trimester, most pregnant women do not even know about fatigue.
Initial fatigue and confusion may turn into  benign pregnancy encephalopathy .

Frequent urination

Do you have to go to the toilet much more often? This can also be a sign of joyful anticipation. Rising levels of the hormone hCG and a dilating uterus push on the bladder and cause more frequent coercion to the toilet. Up to a third of future mothers experience unwanted urine leakage in the 3 trimeters, when the uterus presses on the bladder, especially when sneezing or laughing. Pregnant women are especially bothered by getting up at night.

Mood swings

Feelings of joy and happiness very soon alternate with crying, sadness and fear. Depression in pregnancy is not uncommon. The future mother is going through a big emotional change, which results in the emotions being like on a roller coaster. Mood swings simply belong to pregnancy, let the emotions flow and the bad mood will surely pass soon. Your partner should also get used to fluctuations in your emotions during pregnancy and help you overcome these moods.
How to keep pregnancy emotions under control?

  • Eat healthy
  • Keep fit, swimming is ideal for pregnant women
  • If you are tired or do not feel well, rest
  • Share your concerns with your partner
  • Go to courses for pregnant women
  • Read books for expectant parents
  • Do not switch during housework, the untidy apartment will wait until the next day until you feel better.

Pregnancy and menstruation

Early symptoms of pregnancy include so-called implantation bleeding , which is experienced by up to a third of women. Some women may confuse this light bleeding with menstruation and then find out about their pregnancy a month later. Thus, menstruation in pregnancy is not unusual, it is just not exactly menstruation, but the mentioned implantation bleeding. The first spotting may occur from 10 days after fertilization of the egg. The cause of bleeding is the nesting of an egg in a heavily perfused uterine wall. Due to hormonal changes, a woman can also experience slight cramps in her lower abdomen.
This spotting instead of menstruation at the beginning of pregnancy may not mean anything at all, but still mothers should be wary and in case of spotting or bleeding consult their gynecologist. In some cases, spotting and bleeding may be the cause of impending miscarriage. Due to the greater blood supply to the body, a woman may also experience  bleeding after intercourse , but even in this case, consult your doctor.

Discharge

During the first weeks of pregnancy, expectant mothers may also suffer from discharge, which is caused by increased blood flow to the vaginal mucosa. The discharge is weaker, almost colorless and without burning or itching. Discharge most often occurs at the beginning and end of pregnancy, when the body is already preparing to give birth.

Flatulence and constipation

Pregnant women may also suffer from an increased incidence of bloating during pregnancy. During pregnancy, the digestive processes are slowed down by the hormone progesterone. In the 3rd trimester, the main reason for bloating and a feeling of bloating is especially the growing uterus, which presses on the intestines. Constipation during pregnancy really affects most pregnant women , the expectant mother is not very interested in this topic.

Insomnia and night sweats

With increasing fatigue of a pregnant woman, enough sleep is recommended. Some mothers may suffer from insomnia or excessive night sweats during pregnancy . Even behind these, often unpleasant, symptoms can be a major hormonal change that a pregnant woman experiences during the onset of pregnancy.

Metallic taste in the mouth

Do you have an unusually sour to metallic taste in your mouth? This peculiar taste is caused by a pregnancy hormone called progesterone.

Headache

Headaches in pregnancy can have several causes. Stress, hunger, lack of fluids, sinusitis, muscle stiffness. In most cases, this is nothing serious. However, if double vision is added to severe headaches, see your doctor immediately. These could be symptoms of preeclampsia .
You should skip medication for pregnancy headaches and try other methods to relieve pregnancy headaches.

  • By flooding the body with water or mineral water
  • By banishing hunger
  • Relaxation - relieving stress
  • Cold facing
  • Sufficient sleep

Heartburn

Severe heartburn appears more at the end of pregnancy and can bother many future mothers. However, there are also known cases where heartburn was one of the first symptoms of pregnancy 10 days after fertilization . Therefore, if you have had no experience with heartburn, it is possible that you are pregnant. The main reasons for heartburn are again hormonal changes and slower gastric emptying.
What helps with heartburn?

  • Divide the food into smaller portions
  • Avoid these foods - tomatoes, peppers, citrus fruits, sweet and sourdough foods, spicy and fatty foods
  • Chew chewing gum - chewing increases the production of saliva, which then neutralizes acidity in the stomach
  • Try apple cider vinegar, which will help you digest faster
  • Every day ginger - not only helps with morning sickness and anorexia, but also quickly relieves heartburn. Drink ginger tea twice a day and you can also add fresh ginger to the main course

Dizziness and fainting

Do you feel dizzy and sometimes feel faint? Dizziness and fainting during pregnancy are caused by low blood pressure and less red blood cells.

Skin changes

During pregnancy, so-called pigment spots begin to appear in women . They most often appear as a line between the navel and the pubic bone, occasionally on the face and also darken the nipples. However, these symptoms may also indicate disease of the liver or other organs. If you want to be sure of your pregnancy, we recommend that you visit a female doctor who will clearly confirm the pregnancy.

High basal temperature

If you measured your basal temperature and your fertile days in the period before pregnancy , you can also find out your pregnancy from your chart. The basal temperature changes during the cycle. In the first part of the cycle (before ovulation) it is low (around 36.5 ° C ), after ovulation, the basal temperature increases (usually by 0.2 to 0.4 ° C) due to the hormone and decreases again at the beginning of menstruation. If you are expecting basal temperature during pregnancy it remains elevated for 18 or more days in a row.

Skipping menstruation

If you have regular periods and are now late, there is a high probability that you are pregnant and it is time to take a pregnancy test . However, skipping menstruation can also cause, for example, a large loss or, conversely, weight gain, stress, hormonal imbalance.

Positive pregnancy test

A very reliable proof that you are really pregnant is a positive test for hCG. A pregnancy test detects the presence of a pregnancy hormone in a pregnant woman's blood and shows a positive or negative result. Pregnancy tests are a large selection today and are available at most drugstores and pharmacies. It is recommended that the pregnancy test be performed at least one week after the omission of menstruation. Most women can't wait and perform tests before menstruation. At this time, it may happen that even though the result of the pregnancy test is negative, you are already carrying the baby in you.

Once you have a positive pregnancy test ahead of you and you recover a little from the initial surprise and joy, it's time to see your gynecologist. Schedule your first examination around the 7th week of pregnancy . At this time, the ultrasound doctor could already see your baby's heart rate .

Symptoms of ectopic pregnancy

In some cases, the fertilized egg may settle, most often in one of the fallopian tubes or on the ovary, and not reach the uterus. In such a case, it is a so-called ectopic pregnancy and a rapid surgery is needed . In this case, it is not possible to deliver the baby, and in addition, the mother is also in danger of death . A woman experiences the same symptoms as during a normal pregnancy, ie fatigue, nausea, tightness in the breast, etc.
So how to recognize an ectopic pregnancy?
An ectopic pregnancy can only be determined by a doctor on the basis of a gynecological examination. Ectopic pregnancies occur in about 2% of all pregnant women.

Silent pregnancy symptoms

A silent pregnancy is said when the fetus in the womb stops developing and dies . Experts classify silent pregnancies as spontaneous abortions, with the difference that the woman's body does not find itself that the fetus does not develop and dies. A woman's body still produces pregnancy hormones, and pregnancy symptoms persist . There is no bleeding or convulsions or other warning signs that the pregnancy is not going as it should. A silent pregnancy will not appear until a doctor during a regular pregnancy examination.

Statistics show that up to 30% of pregnancies end in some form of abortion , with a third of abortions. The number of miscarriages has been more or less at the same level since 1960. You can look at these statistics and many other statistics on the IHIS health statistics website  , which is based on data from the National Register of Abortions.
