THE EXPENSE OF RAZOR BLADES
Most people ask just why most razor blades are so damn expensive. The answer may not always be satisfactory, but it perhaps may be an indication that the current market for shaving blades is big. For most men, shaving may be viewed as a past time or as just a morning ritual, without much thought going into the money spent on the razor blade and the benefits derived from it. It is perhaps time to check on this.Straight Razors
Straight razors date back to the 1700s and are still in use today. The razors consist of a blade made of steel and a handle made from wood, bone or plastic material. They have been touted as the best shaving products, giving you a very close shave as compared to all other blades. However, the blade can cause very serious injuries to those who are not accustomed to using it. It therefore requires a skill for one to be able to handle it. Thus, time and commitment are a necessity for those who wish to go the straight razor way.
Cost: Depending on the vintage, it will range between $20 and $50, with the most expensive at $1000.
Safety Razor
A successor to the straight razor, safety razors were perhaps made to make the shaving ritual safer for beginners. They are the most preferred and used blades to date. They offer a close shave without irritations and ingrown hair. It is built of a permanent handle and a metal head that holds one replaceable razor blade that is double edged. One can thus shave using both edges of the razor. As compared to its predecessor, it requires much less pressure, thus fewer nicks and cuts are experienced. However, using it properly requires practice and poor angling of the blade can cause nicks and cuts.
Cost: Varies between $25 and $150 with the replaceable razor blades costing between $0.09 and $0.70
Cartridge Razor
Simple to use razors which allow you to shave both with and against the grain, though it is a rule of thumb to always shave with the grain to avoid ingrown hairs and their resulting razor bumps. It consists of a handle and a replaceable head cartridge which holds around 2, 3 or even 4 stainless steel razor blades. These are safe to use without the worries of nicks and cuts. However the price of these razors is ever increasing and one has to make multiple passes in order to get desirable results.
Cost: The ever increasing prices range from between $1 for one shave to $350 worth of annual shaving.
Electric Razors
Just as the name suggests, these razor blades use electricity to function. You can have a wet shave as well as a dry shave. The dry shave does not require a sink or cream, thus the razor blade finds market with men who are constantly on the go. However, they do not get as close to giving a close shave as other razors do. Also, a lot of men complain of skin irritation after using the blade.
