The End Of The Mitsubishi Pajero

by APSense News Release Admin

Pajero was Mitsubishi’s response to the market-leading SUVs back in the 1980s. It was a mid-sized sports utility vehicle that captured the market with its rugged design and superior build quality. With Mitsubishi's expertise in making off-road rugged rally cars like the Lancer 1600 GSR, they wanted to break through the SUV market with a new capable product. Soon after two concept vehicles, Mitsubishi came up with the Pajero in 1981 and was successful in capturing a large market share. Mitsubishi sold Pajero under the name tag of Montero in Spain and the US and also as Shogun in the United Kingdom.

The Pajero has also had the opportunity to showcase its muscles by participating in the Dakar Rally, which is a staggering 10,000 km of Rally on dirt, dunes, off-road courses, and mud. It got successful in receiving multiple successive wins in the Dakar Rally championship which helped the company prove its point, and market the car well to the end-user. It also helped Mitsubishi to receive a Guinness World Record for having the most Dakar Rally wins in the world.

Pajero’s rugged chassis, independent suspension, and powerful powertrain make it a capable off-road vehicle. The Pajero has been around for almost 15 years, all without any real major upgrade. Although the design of the latest Pajero is outdated,  don’t assume it’s mechanically inferior. It is still a well-equipped SUV that can get you anywhere on land. It is offered with a 3.2-liter turbocharged engine that outputs around 190 bhp and 441 Nm of torque. The engine is coupled with a 5-speed Automatic transmission. It is equipped with what Mitsubishi calls the Super Select II 4WD system that allows you to switch between four-wheel drive modes to perform well on any terrain.

Unfortunately, due to poor sales, Mitsubishi has finally decided to discontinue the Pajero.

Don’t stress though, if your Pajero is taken care of with the right periodic maintenance and replacement parts, it will last you a while yet. Finding reliable used parts for your Mitsubishi from a third-party seller or OEM dealership can be quite a hassle. There are now also online marketplaces like this to purchase parts. If you do choose to purchase used Mitsubishi parts online, I’d recommend checking the feedback of the seller and asking for high-quality photos to ensure you get reliable parts.

Mitsubishi wreckers are also a great source to find quality parts for your Pajero. These wreckers mostly provide you genuine parts at almost half the price of brand new parts. Wreckers mostly have an ample supply of vehicles and have parts for even the oldest Pajero generations. You can find anything from exterior panels, interior trims, electronic components, and mechanical parts at wreckers.

Now that Pajero is gone, putting in the effort to get regular services and reliable parts will help keep it on the road for many more years to come.
