Gypsum is a principal ingredient of drywall. Drywall is used extensively in home construction.  The United States is a large country in which new homes are always being built or old ones renovated. This is a canonical Buffett strategy.
It is a canonical move on Buffett's part because, during the financial crisis, USG ran into cash flow problems, as its main customer, builders, went bust.  Since the credit markets had all but dried up, USG reached out to Buffett for help, as he was a large USG a shareholder at the time.  He negotiated a convertible note, which note has since been converted to common equity. Berkshire Hathaway now owns a majority of the USG.

If the housing market picks up, as Buffett thinks it will, the USG's stock price will increase.

It should also be noted that in the early 90s,  USG was party to asbestos-related litigation; I believe all those issues have been resolved and no longer affect the company.
