by GreeniumIndia India Greenium

The ZZ plant is so hardy, tolerable, and self-sufficient indoor plant that it becomes hard to figure out when it needs water and other basic care. ZZ plants are extremely efficient at self-managing their water requirements but then also it indicates that it is thirsty.

By paying attention to the watering needs of indoor plants you can see the difference between just keeping them alive and allowing them to flourish. ZZ plants utilize the store water in their rhizomes, potato-like structures. They work as water reservoirs during drier times. This plant is native to eastern Africa and can handle long periods of drought.

Make sure that the potting mixture is saturated properly when you water Your ZZ plant. The ZZ plant soaks up plenty of water and stores it in the rhizomes. ZZ plants don't like having their feet wet for too long so proper drainage is essential so make sure pots should have a drainage hole and use quality and porous soil for a proper drainage system.

You can place the saucer under the pot and later empty it to allow the pot to fully dry out. Allow the ZZ plant to dry out completely between waterings. Don't follow a set schedule for the ZZ plant but water it when the soil is dry. The best way to determine your plants' watering needs is to check the soil.

These plants prefer their soil to dry out between waterings because it tends to root rot if the roots and rhizomes stay wet for too long. Stick your finger about two inches deep in the soil to check the moisture level. If it is dry and crumbly then water the plant properly and if the soil is damp then it has plenty of water.

You can also check the moisture level of soil by poking a finger through the drain hole or with the help of a wooden chopstick or square. You can also use a moisture meter if you can invest some money. These devices are usually cheap and provide a scientific approach to guess the watering needs of ZZ plants.

Sometimes ZZ plants also show physical signs of dehydration. The humidity level in your house, local climate, season, airflow, and light levels also affect how fast your plant needs watering. If your ZZ plant looks completely healthy but it starts to look shriveled, brown dry tips on some of the leaves or a few soft leaves are the sign that the plant is drying out.

Generally, the leaves of the ZZ plant are pretty, waxy, and turgid. The wrinkling of the plant's petals is a sign that your ZZ plant might be thirsty.

ZZ plants have a pretty ingenious mechanism for saving water during long periods of drought. But if you don't water it for a long time then leaves will start dropping from your plant at a time. The plant sacrifices a small part of itself to save the life of The whole plant.

Sign of overwatering

Too much attention and care also can kill your plant. We don't know what is best for our plants, maximum time. We want to care for our plants and want them to thrive. If you think that some water is good and more water is better then it is not true for your ZZ plant.

Differentiate between proper watering and overwatering for ZZ plants. These plants not only show the sign that it is thirsty but also indicate that they need a break from watering.

When the roots are saturated with too much water then it absorbs more nutrients from the soil and the leaves of the plant slowly start to turn yellow. Yellowing leaves are the sign of overwatering.

Widespread leaf drop, rhizome root, droopy Mushy and Browning stems are also signs of overwatering. See these signs, then stop overwatering immediately. Allow the soil to dry out for some weeks to a month.

These plants take care of themselves. To keep your ZZ plants happy and healthy, it is very important to know how to properly water them. Pay attention to your plant’s soil and physical conditions and provide a proper amount of water every time.
