If you’re new to snorkeling or re-starting an old diving habit, then check out the tips below to have a successful, stress free snorkeling adventure.

Don’t settle for any size gear

Many snorkeling rental places, especially those that deal with high volumes of traffic, are more concerned if you simply have the gear, rather than if it fits correctly. Be sure to take your time when sizing your fins and mask. Ill-fitting fins can rub annoying blisters and a leaky mask will hinder your ability to see the underwater world below. Never feel in a rush to pick our snorkel gear and be sure you feel comfortable with your mask, fins and snorkel before heading out to open water.

Do take your time sizing and shopping

Because properly sized gear, that’s both functional and easy to wear, can mean the difference between a great diving adventure and a snorkeling trip from hell, be sure to take your time picking out your swim gear. This is true if you are shopping for the equipment before hand or choosing from a gear shop’s rental selection. Pick a snorkel that’s appropriate for the conditions your swimming in. Dry snorkels are popular among beginner swimmers because they are caped with a dry valve to help keep water from entering the barrel. If available, try the Finis Dry Top on your current snorkel. It snaps onto any Finis Swimmer’s Snorkel and helps keep water out.

Don’t wait until the day of to try out your mask

You might assume that if you bought brand new gear, that it will work perfectly the day of your big dive. This is not always the case, especially with masks and fins. Because masks have to be adjusted and fitted before use, it’s a good idea to try out a few styles before your dive. Even masks that fit while dry might not be able to hold enough suction against your face when wet to keep the water out. Find a mask that comes with a wide, comfortable silicone skirt, such as the Speedo Hyperfluid Mask, that will easily mold to the curves of your face.

Do break in your fins before wearing

Ill-fitting fins can wreak havoc on the delicate skin around your ankle and toes. Fins that chafe, even when worn for only a few minutes, can rough up feet and cause you to miss subsequent dives. As with masks, be sure to test and break in fins before your snorkeling trip. Wear them around in your backyard pool, which will give them time to mold to your feet for a chafe-free fit. The US Diver Sea Lion Swim Fins are always a great choice for snorkelers, no matter the skill level.

Don’t try to challenge yourself on the first swim

Even if you are a strong swimmer and feel comfortable in the water, it’s important to remember to take it easy on your first few snorkels. Don’t try to challenge yourself by diving in remote, choppy waters. Shore dives, those that are started from the shoreline, are a great way to ease into the sport. Plus, most of the time fish and marine life are located in shallower, close-to-shore areas.

Do take it easy, relax and remember to breathe and have fun!

Go with an experienced guide that will help you see all the sights and keep your peace of mind throughout the entire dive. Make your snorkeling trip as fun and stress-free as possible by relaxing, breathing evenly, and enjoying the underwater world below.
