The Different Needs of CNC Machinery in Various Sectors

by Jeff Banes Marketing Manager

CNC or Computer Numerical Control machines are a significant part of the manufacturing industries. They are accurate, adaptable and fast and they come with CNC machinist training to operate the machine. Manufacturers of CT's are leaders in creating products which affect the world, like submarines, jet engines, and helicopters.

The medical, military, aerospace, and many other industries benefit on a large or small level from CNC machines and skilled CNC machinists.

But, all of these industries depending on their industry type have different CNC needs, therefore, let's see how it can be categorized as one of the four categories:

1. Workpiece-producing companies- These companies have two names either job shops or contract shops. They generate revenue by selling workpiece to product producing companies.

2. Product-producing companies- They generate revenue with the sale of one or more products.

3. Tooling-producing companies- The revenue is generated when the sale of tooling, i.e., cutting tools, dies, fixtures, gages and more occur and also of workpiece-producing companies.

4. Prototype-producing companies- The revenue is generated by selling prototypes to product-producing companies.

Product and workpiece producing companies are what most of the companies that use CNC machines are categorized under.

Resources, Planning, and Engineering

  • The product-producing companies engineer all aspects of the manufacturing processes they perform, therefore before producing a new product a great deal of work goes into consideration.

  • All the operations that will be carried out should be well documented so that the employees are aware of their task.

  • The profit of product should be determined before the first product is sent for production.

  • Similar to the product-producing companies, workpiece-producing companies produce the same workpieces but on a lower or equal price.

#Product-producing companies farm out work to save money.

Therefore, this indicates that workpiece-producing companies produce workpieces using fewer resources than product-producing companies.

As they have limited time to produce the workpiece they are out of time to plan the jobs, therefore, they come up with unique methods to bridge the gaps.

Machine Utilization VS Personnel

Product-producing companies need to maintain a certain pace. Therefore, they want CNC machines to be in sync with their pace to meet the production speed and volume.

Machines should be busy to work in a certain capacity. This is the reason product-producing companies strain machine utilization rather than personnel utilization.

On the other hand, workpiece producing companies use their won task force to ship jobs on a timely basis.  They emphasize on personnel utilization rather than machine utilization.

Though it's essential to keep the machines running for as long as possible, workpiece-producing companies end up compromising in this context.

One person is solely responsible for setting up the machine, complete production and it's possible he/she also creates a program for it. Therefore, sometimes the machines aren't running as there's no one to run them.

Diversity in Processes

Until the product-producing companies intend to outsource, they should have equipment for all the manufacturing process that is considered for the workpieces.

Products that are simple also require a diverse variety of machine tools, including conventional & CNC machines; even machines that don't remove metal are also needed for plating, cleaning, painting and heat treating.

Product- producing companies are supposed to be Jacks-of-all-trades

and should handle any process that takes place in their products.

It is understandable that they can't master every process, but they should be efficient enough that they produce workpiece at a rate that matches their production timetable.

In contradiction to this, the workpiece-producing companies specialize in the machine tools they have.

Most of the companies have only a single kind of CNC machine tool, and therefore specialization in a machine that conducts a certain process gets easy.

Here's an example- The company is specialized in turning processes that are conducted by sliding-headstock CNC lathes.

They also become specialized in running small lots which makes them familiar with prototype producing companies. Therefore workpiece-producing companies are supposed to be good at the processes they specialize.

This is the sole factor that lets them beat product-producing companies.
