The Color of an Alexandrite Gemstone Fascinates A Woman

by Steve Smith writer

Alexandrite, the name itself reminds us of the name of a great warrior. The discovery of the stone has a strong history related with it.  It derives its name from the Russian King Czar Alexander II. It is said that the stone was discovered at the day of the king's birth in the year 1834 and hence the name Alexandrite was kept. The stone was first excavated in the Ural Mountains of Russia. Initially, the name of the stone was kept as diaphanite, which meant to appear in the Greek language but later the name was changed to Alexandrite.

The speciality of the stone is the frequent change in its color under different light conditions. The stone exhibits green color when placed under sunlight and red when placed under lamplight. This phenomenon is known as the alexandrite effect. The stone also displays a variety of colors such as orange, red, yellow and emerald green when views from alternate angles. Hence, it is also named as pleochroic gem. The property of this stone to exhibit various colors makes it one of the most rarely occurring gemstone on this planet.

The green color of the stone is due to the presence of Chromium. This is the same element which is found in the emerald gemstone. The color also varies according to the country of origin. For instance: those that are found in Sri Lanka have got Khaki or a brown color, the ones from Zimbabwe are purple in color. The Tanzanian Alexandrite on the other hand has lighter color. A Brazilian Alexandrite's color varies from blue to purple.

Color plays a very important role while purchasing an Alexandrite Gemstone. Infact, it all depends upon the way the stone is being cut. The stones that are mostly available in the market today can see a slight change in the color. The variation in the color may take place from yellowish green to orange also. The value of an alexandrite is more than an emerald, blue sapphire and ruby. Amongst all the countries, Sri Lanka is said to produce the purest Alexandrites.

These stones are used in a wide variety of jewellery. In the ancient times they were used to design antique Russian as well as Victorian jewellery. Due to its hardness and durability, the stone can be used in any form of jewellery like pendants, earrings. Most of them are used in making anniversary bands, halo designing jewellery as well as eternity bands. It is also used as a gift for celebrating the 55th marriage anniversary.

As far as cleaning of the stone is concerned, it is necessary to clean them quite carefully. While cleaning the stone, a mild soap should be used. The temperature of the water should either be warm or at room temperature. It is better to remove the stone while engaging in some form of work. Thus, taking a good care of the stone will certainly increase its effects and you can also continue to wear it for a prolonged period of time.
