Choosing the right kind of furniture for your home can be overwhelming. There is an array of mind-boggling choices, from leather sofas to other fabrics and cane furniture.

There are also many options in terms of themes and styles. Have you ever thought of getting a Chesterfield sofa? A leather sofa that can immediately add more than a touch of elegance to your space.  All eyes on that Chesterfield sofa India leather furniture stores have? It’s but natural to want one because the Chesterfield is not just a piece of furniture. It is a slice of history.

A Chesterfield sofa, with its rolled arms, the low backrest that is at the same height as the arms, its impeccable leather, deep buttoning/studying, is a symbol of prestige and sophistication. It reminds you of the Victorian era. It reminds you of prestigious clubs peopled by the cream of society. The Chesterfield is not just a great piece in terms of design but also in terms of comfort.

Here are some historical facts related to the Chesterfield leather sofa:

Envisaged by Earl of Chesterfield: The first ever Chesterfield was commissioned, as anecdotes go, by Lord Phillip Stanhope, who was the Fourth Chesterfield Earl. The story goes that he sought a craftsman to design a piece that would let a gentleman sit in an upright manner while being comfortable. He also wanted a chair that wouldn’t crease/wrinkle a gentleman’s clothes. The chair has taken various forms ever since, but it was first envisaged by him. (1694-1773). The chair grew in popularity in the 18th century.

Give him a chair? Another account says that when the Earl was lying on his deathbed, he asked his butler to give Mr Dayrolles a chair. This can be interpreted in two ways: to give him a seat or to pass on the chair to him. The butler thought the Chesterfield was to be passed on to Solomon Dayrolles, the Earl’s godson. Dayrolles then took the chair home and it was much admired.

Makes a presence in the colonies: It is also said that the Chesterfields were sent to the colonies of the British by those employed by the Army of the Royalty. The chairs soon became associated with luxury and class.

Popularity grows and the Chesterfield is an icon

As the popularity of Chesterfields grew, their demand was felt across the world. They are now considered vintage furniture and many who want to give their homes that sophisticated Victorian era touch seeks the coveted design. Also, the huge advantage of modern-day Chesterfields is that they fit in with any decor scheme. Their style is such that they can blend with contemporary decor and sit well with interior principles as well.

Chesterfields that use authentic leather grow softer and better with age and you will feel more comfortable as time passes by. Faux leather, on the other hand, will look shiny and plasticky and may not be all that comfortable as time passes by.
