What is Bone Marrow Transplantation?

It is a procedure to replace the damaged or destroyed bone marrow using healthy bone marrow stem cells. Procedure

Conditioning

Before beginning the transplantation procedure, there is a step called conditioning where your body undergoes chemotherapy and radiation to destroy the malignant cancer cells, suppress your immune system to accept the newly infused stem cells and prepare your bone marrow to get adapted for new stem cells.

Transplantation

This is the final step where the newly extracted stem cells are injected through a thin tube into the vein in your chest called a central line. The new stem cells find a way to your bone marrow that can take several weeks for the counts to become normal. The process takes about a couple of hours and it is painless.
