What is Bone Marrow Transplantation?

It is a procedure to replace the damaged or destroyed bone marrow using healthy bone marrow stem cells. Bone marrow is a soft and spongy tissue found inside your bones which are responsible for producing various blood cells like Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells, Platelets, Plasma cells, and immune cells. Therefore the cells derived from bone marrow are called stem cells which have the potential to regenerate into any other type of cells in your body. Hence it can infuse healthy blood cells in your body and acts as a permanent solution for various blood and bone marrow diseases, especially for various blood cancers.

Procedure

There are three basic steps followed during every bone marrow transplant in India. The transplantation procedure is done in a stepwise manner such as collection, conditioning, and transplanting.

Collection

This step involves the collection of blood from one arm using a thin tube and it is then poured into a machine to separate your stem cells. These cells are frozen safely for future use. The remaining blood is then returned into your body. This is called the stem cell harvest or bone marrow harvest. The stem cells are derived either from the donor’s blood or bone marrow and transplant team determines which option is suitable for you.

Conditioning

Before beginning the transplantation procedure, there is a step called conditioning where your body undergoes chemotherapy and radiation to destroy the malignant cancer cells, suppress your immune system to accept the newly infused stem cells and prepare your bone marrow to get adapted for new stem cells.

Transplantation

This is the final step where the newly extracted stem cells are injected through a thin tube into the vein in your chest called a central line. The new stem cells find a way to your bone marrow that can take several weeks for the counts to become normal. The process takes about a couple of hours and it is painless.

The success rate of Bone marrow Transplants

The success rate of bone marrow transplant in India is the measure of the percentage of patients who have received haematopoietic stem cells have survived over the indicated period of time. This is also helpful to understand the effectiveness of treatments which are beneficial for the patients.
