The Biryani bet! – by Rahul Sisodia
by Travel Khana Khana Online in TrainIt was that time of the year when the
two giants of cricket collided in a match that went beyond the mere game and
struck right at our hearts.
The whole nation had come to a standstill to witness India take on the mighty
rival Pakistan.
And like always, every radio and every TV set in the country was tuned in to
see the outcome of this event.
Now, we did consider it as one of the most important cricketing events, but
oddly enough, it had to happen on the very same day that me and my colleague
were off to Lucknow to meet our respective families.
On one hand we were pretty excited about the whole thing, seeing them after a long time, but then again, considering the hard core cricket aficionados that we are, missing the match was a sin in itself.
So we made provisions, our mobiles constantly rang through the trip with updates about the fours, the sixes and the occasional jumping up every time a Pakistan player got out.
But what is cricket without a good bet?
So I look over to Anshuman and with a devilish smile ask him if he’s interested
in getting a bit of action going over the match. We made a promise not to
involve any money, considering we’re friends, so the most logical option left
was to treat each other to some delicious Lucknow biryani.
This is where the game got interesting,
we were down to the last over and India was head to head with Pakistan.
Only one wicket left, and Pakistan had to score 8 runs in one over. I somehow
knew we weren’t going to make it, but still, I supported my country till the
end.
Anshuman however, be it the biryani or just the lust for victory, made it very
clear that if Pakistan won, the biryani would be on me.
And before you know it, the opposition ended the game with a six.
Defeated and sad I shook his hand and pulled out my phone. To be honest, I too
was looking forward to some good food, but I really couldn’t show it on my
face.
I log on to Travelkhana.com, the site
that enables me to order food online,
and get it delivered right to my train seat. Placed an order for two Lucknow
Special Biryanis and waited for dinner time.
Now when the meal came, our faces lit up with excitement like little kids when
we see our mothers cook something special.
That fluffy rice, perfectly spiced with the right amount of seasoning, and the
chicken that’s clearly been marinated to a point where the meat just falls
apart in your mouth… One can go on and on about that biryani, truth is, words
aren’t enough to describe the experience.
Somehow we forgot about the match and enjoyed our meal together, and let’s face
it, I did not mind losing that bet even one bit!
