The Basics of Dog Tags

Dog tags seem like they would be very easy to create, but a surprising number of questions can arise when it comes down to actually ordering them. Simply putting a tag with your dog’s name on it would do little good if your dog were lost.  The person who found your dog would be able to call him or her by his or her name, but they would have no idea who to notify of the lost pet. At the same time, you don’t want to put too much information on the tag since they are often too small to contain all of it.

Here is a basic how-to that should help you create the perfect dog tag for your furry friend.

•    While putting your dog’s name and no other information wouldn’t suffice, you still need to include your dog’s name on the tag. This can help identify your dog and can narrow down your search if your contact information on the tag goes out of date.
•    If your dog needs regular medication, it is vital that you include this on the tag.
•    If your dog has a microchip, putting this on the tag can help people know how to identify your dog.
•    If you have a small dog and are ordering a smaller dog tag for a small dog collar, such as the common round, quarter-sized disc tags, keep in mind that you can put information on both sides of the tag. It would suffice to put your dog’s name on one side and your telephone number on the back if it won’t also fit on the front. You could also possibly fit your dog’s name on the front with your telephone number, then either an address or additional information about your dog, such as “needs medication daily,” or “micro-chipped.”
•    If your dog collar is larger, you may want to consider putting your address so that whoever finds your dog can drop them off at your house if they wish. This would save both parties time in tracking each other down. Some people don’t necessarily want their home address to be so readily available though, so it really comes down to what you are comfortable with.
•    When people hear dog tag, they often think of the typical dangling tag that is fastened at the front of the dog collar. Tags are also made that attach discreetly to the sides of collars though, and if you opt for these, you can place two or three around the collar and include all of the necessary information. These tags also eliminate potentially annoying jingling that tags create.
