Techniques to sharpen your MIG welding skills

by Longevity Inc Industrial Mechanical

MIG welding is an electric arc welding process and is also referred to as GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding). This welding process offers a lot of versatility and is capable of welding most types of metals. This semi-automatic arc welding uses a continuous and consumable wire electrode and also a shielding gas. It allows the welder to weld in most of the positions, flat horizontal being the most optimum.

How to precisely weld using MIG technique:

• Make sure you have all the safety equipment in place so that you don’t harm yourself while welding. A lot of sparks and extremely hot metals are created during the process which can catch fire easily. To prevent all such mishaps, make use of all the safety equipment such as: welding mask, heat resistant gloves, flameproof jacket, closed toed shoes and fire extinguisher etc.

• To ensure a successful weld, all pieces of metal should be cleaned properly. The metal pieces should be rust and paint free so that these contaminants don’t reduce the weld strength.

• Though MIG torch or gun can be easily handled with one hand but it can produce more accurate welds if you use both hands. Operate the gun with one hand and keep the other hand steady to angle the torch properly. Use of only one hand can cause the tip to jump around and create a weak weld.

• Ensure that the wire tip is ejecting from the welding torch by approximately 6 mm to 10 mm, then only touch the wire tip to the metal.

• Though it doesn’t make a big difference to the weld quality whether you push or pull the torch but the welding professional must be aware of both the techniques.

• The most common method is to push the gun toward the direction of the weld and it produces a shallow penetration weld with a wide, flat and smooth surface. When you pull the gun toward the direction of the weld, it produces a deep penetration weld that is narrow and high in the center. Some situations require you to weld in an awkward position that only allows pushing or pulling the torch. So, a professional must practice both the techniques.
