by Ronit Roy Health Educator & Consultant

COVID-19 outbreak has made all of us panicked and an overthinker. Salute to our front-line medical professionals, healthcare workers, shopkeepers, police, delivery boys, and everyone who is working round the clock to make our lives comfortable.

Coronavirus is a mystery because it's a completely new virus and we have little to no information regarding COVID-19. It's always best to get your facts from the experts. So, by keeping that in mind, Dr Om Tantia, the chairperson of ILS Hospitals - Kolkata and Agartala had a chat about COVID-19 management with Pranab Sarkar, editor of famous news channel, Headlines Tripura.

In this article, we'll discuss what the doctor has to say about this entire COVID-19 crisis.

Dr Om Tantia started the conversation by saying that the condition is thankfully better in the North-Eastern States of India as there are fewer cases of Corona if compared to other states. West Bengal by god's grace does not have too many cases either. The doctor said that it is difficult to stop the virus transmission as it will stop gradually but the positive part or what we should say, the silver lining of this entire scenario is a large number of people recovering and defeating this novel virus.

When the reporter asked him on the transmission of COVID-19, the doctor expounded that after a person gets infected with the Coronavirus, there is something known as an incubation period, the period in which the virus multiplies or rapidly replicates in the host's body. The symptoms start to occur when the immune system fails to contain the virus. In case of a strong immune system, the symptoms are mild or non-existent. However, the person with no symptoms of the virus can still infect other individuals during the incubation period.

Dr Om Tantia stated that our foremost job is to identify and quarantine asymptomatic patients to prevent the transmission of Coronavirus and ultimately defeat COVID-19. He reminded us that it's a new disease and hence there is less information available. Since there's no vaccine or specific medicines for Corona, the hospitals are providing antiviral and symptomatic treatment to COVID positive patients. Dr Om Tantia assured us that just because a patient is on ventilator does not mean there's no hope left. A good number of patients have recovered from COVID-19 despite being on a ventilator. The doctor again stated that the cases of Corona in Tripura are fortunately far less and highlighted the importance of identifying, testing, and quarantining asymptomatic patients to triumph against Coronavirus.

The doctor predicted that the numbers might start to fall during September. The news editor then asked him about the vaccine for Corona. Dr Om Tantia replied that the vaccine firstly needs to undergo both animal and human trials for mass usage. He calculated that the vaccine might not come before September 2021.

From Dr Om Tantia's conversation with Pranab Sarkar, we learnt that asymptomatic patients need to be identified and quarantined; mass testing and social distancing is the ultimate way to fight against Corona. Many hospitals in Kolkata and Agartala are fighting against Corona and treating patients with utter professionalism and compassion. When you face any symptoms of COVID-19, visit your nearest healthcare centre without any delay.
