Syncing Devices Using A Cloud

With piracy and torrenting still huge issues facing the music industry, it is difficult to motivate individuals to pay for legal music downloads.  Additionally, downloading songs from many popular music download sites is not the same as purchasing this music.  Even though individuals have paid to download these songs, they do not technically own them.  This means that a number of safeguards are in place to make these songs difficult to transfer to other individuals’ mp3 players or smartphones.  While this can be frustrating, it is easily made up for by how easily an individual can transfer their music to all the devices they own.  Transferring songs from a computer to a smartphone, tablet, and any other device, has never been easier than with a cloud-based system.

At its most basic, a cloud server is a way to remotely store data so that it is available, from anywhere, via the internet.  It is referred to as a cloud, since its ease makes it seem like the data is being pulled from thin air – and, in a way, it is.  Clouds are actually a layer of software that acts like a server, without the need of any hardware.  While that is a rather nebulous concept to understand, using a cloud system is far easier.  

The first thing individuals will need is to choose a cloud system to use.  There are many options available online, and most have storage options that are free.  When choosing their cloud service individuals will set up an account using an email address and password.  This log in is very important, as it will be used on each device an individual owns to log into the cloud.  On most devices the application for the chosen cloud service will need to be downloaded, but this is generally also available for free. 

From there things get even easier, as individuals simply open the application on any device, and instantly have access to everything they’ve stored on the cloud.  Individuals then have the option to download all of those songs and files, or just the ones that are not currently on the device they are using.  This takes minutes, as opposed to hours, and can be repeated on as many devices as one’s heart desires.

Now, different cloud services cover different file types.  Most will include music and movies, while others will also store and transfer pictures and word documents.  Determining the primary use of one’s cloud syncing is a critical step when choosing the right cloud service, as is storage size.  Five gigabytes of storage are generally offered free of charge, but that is usually only enough for one or two movies.  This is fine if individuals simply plan to upload something to the cloud long enough for it to be downloaded elsewhere, but such action severely mitigates the benefits of a cloud system.  One such benefit is that a cloud can serve as a way for individuals to back up important files and data, and reclaim them after a system crash or malfunction.  Using a cloud as a back up system generally requires far more storage, and can be purchased for an annual fee.  This is also a commonly used option by those who subscribe to sites that offer unlimited music downloads, having a literally endless supply of music available on any device is easily worth the extra money.
