Surgeries Performed To Remove Kidney Stone

Surgery is done to remove the kidney stone if the stone is too big and cannot be passed through urine and is causing pain during urination. The surgery is also needed if the stone is stuck in a difficult place. Other conditions for surgery include blockage of urine by stone, causing damage to kidney and leading to bleeding, urine tract infection, or when the stone has grown large.

 

Extracorporeal shock wave is the most commonly used procedure for removal of kidney stones. In this procedure the shock waves are created outside the body and they travel through the body to reach the kidney stones. These shock waves break the stones into smaller pieces and these pieces are then passed through urine tract. The use of ultrasound or x –ray is done to locate the stone during treatment. 

 

After the treatment, the patient can resume the normal working life after few days. The recovery time is less and treatment is done on outpatient basis. Local anesthesia is given during the treatment. If the stones are not broken into smaller pieces with one treatment, the doctor may recommend second round of treatment.

 

Another method used to remove the kidney stone is called Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy.  This is done when the stone are large and in stuck at a place, where the use of shock wave will not be effective. This procedure is done by making an incision in the back and creates a tunnel to the stone for removing the stone. The tunnel is created by the instrument called nephroscope.  For larger stones, the ultrasonic or elctrohydraulic energy probe is used to break the stone into smaller pieces. The patient has to stays in hospital for several days during the treatment. The advantage of this procedure is that the pieces of stone are directly removed by surgeon instead of depending on the natural route through urine.

 

Ureteroscopic procedure is used for mid to lower ureter stones. In this procedure the surgeon passes the instrument called ureteroscope through urethra and bladder to ureter.  When stones are located, the surgeon Kidney stone specialist doctor in Delhi either breaks them into pieces by shock wave or removes them directly by cage like device. The patient may have to stay in hospital for few days. A small tube or stent is left in ureter for few days to help the patient to pass the urine.
