What Is An Electric Substation?
So for all those who don’t know what an electric substation is then it can be defined as a network of electrical components that consist of power transformers, auxiliaries, switchgear and busbars. It is also to be noted here that the components of the substation are interconnected, which creates a sequence of a circuit capable to be switched off as it is working on normal operation through manual commands. On the other hand, in emergency cases, it can be automatically turned off. The emergency situations can be floods, earthquake, or short circuit etc.

In addition to this, an electric substation boasts of an array of outgoing and incoming circuits which are connected to a busbar i.e. common entity among circuits. Through incoming power supply lines, the substations receives electrical energy. Meanwhile, it offers electricity to the customers through transmission lines.

Types Of Electric Substation Layouts
There are three major types of electrical substations. Below are the types along with the description of their respective characterstics:
• Single Busbar Substation
In single busbar substation, there is no loss of supply in outages as there is a circuit breaker for the security of each circuit. Moreover, there are bypass isolators amongst the circuit isolator and busbar, therefore, allowing maintenance of circuit breaker without any loss to the circuit. Maintenance of busbar results in an outage of 2 circuits because of there is any fault in there, it loses transformer or feeder.
• Mesh Busbar Substation
In mesh busbar substation, two circuit breakers are required to disconnect or connect a circuit. There is an option of upkeeping of circuit breakers without any loss of supply. If the circuit breaker loss occurs it is due to the faulty busbar. On the other hand, the fault in breaker involves loss of two circuits.
• One and Half Circuit Breaker Substation
In one and half circuit breaker substation, high security is involved alongside the loss of supply. There is an opportunity of functioning only one pair of circuits, a pair of circuits, or groups of circuits. It is also to be mentioned here that the circuit breakers are having a complex arrangement and higher costs are involved.
