Subaru Impreza is a five-door hatchback or a four-door sedan, introduced in 1992. Subaru also introduced a performance-oriented versions of the Impreza with a turbocharged 2.0-liter (EJ20) and a 2.5-liter (EJ25) boxer engines. It used the abbreviated names Impreza WRX (World Rally eXperimental) and Impreza WRX STI (Subaru Tecnica International). After several years of production, Subaru decided to treat the WRX as a separate project from the Impreza.

First-Generation WRX

The 1st model of the WRX was produced in 1992, packed with numerous rally technologies such as an all-wheel drive, front bucket seats, stiffened suspensions, viscous center, and rear differentials, with 157KW (210HP) to 185KW (250HP) turbocharged boxer engine. Subaru introduced the Subaru WRX STI in 1994 with the introduction of forged pistons, a better intercooler, carbon fiber strut bars, and some drivetrain upgrades. The Subaru WRX was equipped with an electronic engine control with a differential lock and 3 driving modes with average fuel consumption of 10.5L/100km.

Second-Generation WRX STI

Subaru released the second-generation WRX STI in 2000 and in 2004, the WRX STI introduced the most powerful version, with the 2.5-liter (EJ255) turbocharged boxer engine producing 224KW (300HP), mated with a robust 6-speed manual transmission.

Third-Generation WRX STI

Subaru released the third-generation WRX in 2007 and available only as a hatchback model with a much larger body, but maintain the same weight as the previous models. It came with Macpherson struts on its front suspensions with a multi-link setup at the rear. The engine remained the same, but now produced 198KW (265HP).

Fourth-Generation WRX STI 


The fourth generation of Subaru WRX has an old interior with hard plastic surfaces, but the infotainment system is straightforward, comfortable and manually adjustable front seats, and the back outboard seats can fit 2 adults with ease. The driver cabin are cushioned and provide enough leg and headroom for tall occupants. Outward visibility is excellent in all directions. Available upgrades include a power-adjustable driver’s seat, leather upholstery, heated front seats, and Recaro front sport seats.

Also comes with automatic climate control, remote keyless entry, a rearview camera, and an infotainment system that includes a 6.5-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, Bluetooth, and two USB ports. And some available features such as 7-inch touch screen, a 9-speaker Harman Kardon stereo, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and adaptive headlights.

The fourth-generation WRX was unveiled in 2014 and was only available as a Sedan. It comes with a 460-liter boot and a turbocharged 4-cylinder 2.5-liter 221KW (296 HP) engine, with a six-speed manual transmission (no auto). The 2014 WRX STI acceleration clocks 5.2 seconds from 0-100 kph. The last version of this fourth generation is the 2018 WRX STI with the same boxer 2.5-liter turbocharged flat-four that produced 228KW (305HP) and a six-speed manual transmission only. The 2018 WRX STI has a bit modern design with a redesigned front end, a newly revised AWD system, an all-new electronic center differential, retuned suspension system, new Brembo brakes, and 19-inch wheels. It has an average fuel consumption of 11 litre/100km (9.1km/litre) extra urban, and 10 litre/100km (10.0km/litre) combined.
