by Schezan M. Student Accommodation Expert

Studying overseas is undoubtedly one of the most exciting and thrilling parts of a student’s life. However, for many students, regardless of it being the perfect opportunity to explore, travel, learn a new language and meet new friends moving to and living in a new country isn’t an easy-peasy transition.

Apart from feeling homesick and experiencing “Cultural Shock”, there are still many other issues that a student could face during their time abroad.

So we’ve jotted down some of the common challenges university students face while finding accommodation in an international country and suggested a few ways to tackle them.

  1. FINDING A BUDGET- FRIENDLY STUDENT ACCOMMODATION

We know how confusing and difficulty finding a place to live can be with it being your first time moving out from your home into a new foreign country- particularly if you are under a budget

Solutions:

  • Prepare your accommodation budget.

  • Jot down all the facilities that you need in your accommodation.

  • Search and compare the rent on various websites.

  • Check those reviews and ratings.

  • Do not hesitate to ask your queries directly to your booking manager.

2. GETTING TRICKED INTO RENTAL SCAMS

Getting tricked into a rental scam is one of another common problem faced by many students while searching for affordable student accommodation!

With a substantial amount of students looking out for budget-friendly student housing options every year, seasonal rental frauds are on the hike.

And with the fraudster’s being exceptionally skilled at their work, how could someone get around this well thought and structured scam?

Solution:

  • Appearance can be illusory- Always check the accommodation in person before deciding on anything. And If you’re unable to be there in person, always ask them for a skype viewing option.

  • Always rent out through a recognized and creditable letting agencies

  • Always check and read all the property documents thoroughly before accepting and signing.

  • Always keep a record of your advance payment and tenancy deposits.

3. FINANCES:

Moving-in and living in an entirely new country won’t all be an easy and comfortable transition, and we know that for a fact!

And with it being your first time away from home and starting your new journey, be ready to brace some challenges and start keeping a track on your finances

Solutions:

  •  Search and Install some useful budget management apps, such as Mint or Goodbudget.

  • Take up some part-time jobs.

  • Stop spending too much on food. If possible start cooking your own food.

  • Buy second-hand books.

4. COMMUNICATION BARRIER

Another common problem that most of the student struggle with is the communication barrier. No matter how much you have prepped yourself for this, but once you get there, everything might seem completely foreign to you.

Be its difficulty in understanding the accent or language barrier or being too shy to speak, communication in a new state can be hard.

This often discourages most of the students from further engaging in conversations and speaking up in public.

Solutions:

  • Take up some language courses. It will not only brush up your language skill but will also help in making a new pal.

  • Watch and learn from Youtube’s beginners guide videos.

  • Install some useful language learning apps, such as Learn Languages or Duolingo.
