Steps the NGO Staffs Take to Motivate People with Disabilities in India

by Joyeeta Gupta Social Worker
Disabilities are either by birth or by accident. In either case, the people with disabilities are not incapable of merits. NGO staffs take initiatives to bring them to the mainstream.

As we all know, nothing is impossible when there is determination, it holds true for disabled people also. No handicap can be a barrier, and the NGOs functioning to uplift the disabled people in India have proved the worth of this statement.

To let the disabled people come out of their shells and prove their skills, the NGO authorities took up steps to stand beside the people with disabilities in India. Thanks to the efforts of the NGOs, disabled people could find a voice of their own, identify their specific needs, prioritize and express their vies, evaluate services, and advocate for changes and public awareness. The NGO authorities emphasized self-development and provided disabled people with a lot of opportunities for developing skills in organizational abilities, negotiation process, information sharing, mutual support, and even vocational skills.

Thus, when evaluated from the point of view of importance in the participation process, then their development and efforts are always to be encouraged.
Through these following steps, the NGO authorities could motivate the disabled people along with financial assistance.

i. Promotion of Public Awareness
The NGOs for the disabled people in India create public awareness regarding the needs, specific aspirations, and abilities of disabled people. Then the NGO members promote this awareness through different activities, like monitoring service agencies, lobbying the government, publishing newsletters, and speaking up at the conferences and national media. Often they lead the person to speak up for themselves, as they can understand their needs and dreams better. Likewise, disabled people get to create a "voice of their own".

ii. Medium for the Self-Help Projects
The NGOs serve as the initiators of the self-help projects to integrate disabled people into society's mainstream. These self-help projects are initiated in two major areas- employment and independent living. All these centers are necessary for filling up the gaps existing in the services identified by disabled people.

iii. Ensuring Solidarity and Mutual Support
The NGOs for disabled people are the medium for mutual support as well as solidarity. The disabled people belonging to these groups can discover they are having a common purpose, and it is to promote their rights to live as free citizens in society and earn a living to support themselves. This common feeling fosters mutual support feelings as well as solidarity.

iv. Promoting Self-Development
The NGOs have a vital role to play in developing the skills of the disabled people in the management, negotiation process, letter writing, and documenting proposals. At the same time, disabled people even get the platform to develop mutual support and develop the skills necessary to be employed.
In fact, disabled people get the opportunity to prove themselves as volunteer committee members and salaried employees by learning the skills to benefit them in the market for open employment. As such, most of their training in the necessary field takes place in the national and local organizations for them to learn new skills as they have to take care of certain matters to prolong and strengthen the aims of the NGOs.

v. Evaluations and Monitoring Services
As disabled people best know their needs, so the NGOs evaluate and monitor the services. This process outlines their expectations so the government can serve them their rights.

NGOs have a superior role to play at the national, local, and even international levels for the welfare of disabled people. They are successful thanks to their efforts and donations provided by the government, private sectors, and services of the service providers, as well as the general public. As a matter of fact, from their own experiences, disabled people understand their needs, aspirations, and abilities.
