Steps for Paint Surface Preparation

by Pradeep S. Digital Marketing Strategist
Most people tend to emphasize the paint finishes, which is also important since this is what people will see after the paint has dried. However, for a long-lasting and fresh looking paint, you should not underestimate the essence of proper surface preparation.

Residential painters Gold Coast is one of the renowned professional painting solutions to your interior and exterior painting. You can rely on our services fully. For over 28 years of experience in the market, we satisfy the customers' demand with committed workmanship towards high standards.

Below are the steps to follow for painting surface preparation;
  1. Wash the wall with any household detergent to remove dirt. You can use a cigarette smoke of heavy build-up or a Trip Sodium Phosphate to grease and later on rinse it with water.
  2. Remove the loose sand paints where the paints have broken off using a spackle blade or a scraper. In case of any crack, dig out a fraction of an inch to improve the contact between the wall and the patching material.
  3. Apply spackles to the cracks, whereby two thin patch coats are recommended to a thick patch since a thick patch tends to crack and shrink as it dries. You can use "Fix all" to patch your first crack and follow it with a thin spackle coat.
  4. In case the existing wall is not smooth, your patch should also match the wall's texture. You can dab the surface to create a stippled effect with a stipple brush or a sponge; this is necessary when the patching material is still tacky. You can also roll a stipple paint coat or a thinned out joint compound on the dry patch.
  5. Seal joints around door jambs, baseboards, and window casings using latex caulk and wipe off the excess using a dump rag. Remember that deep cracks will always require more than just an application.
  6. All glossy surfaces should be sanded or treated with liquid sandpaper. The sanding will make the surface rough for good adhesion with the subsequent coat.
  7. All painting surfaces should be clean, free of rust, dirt, oil, grease, cracks, or loose paints and chemicals before applying a primer.
