Stem Cell Treatment for Parkinson’s Disease
by VAISHNAV KUMAR Online Marketing ExpertParkinson’s disease is one of the major
neurological disorders, making many people helpless in India. Recently, scientists
have started getting links on the onset of the disease occur.
Parkinson’s is a kind of progressive
neurological disorders, caused by the gradual loss of dopamine producing cells.
Our brain is the central organ involved in controlling measure activities of
our body. Neurons are the cells, carrying all information from brain to
respected organ, to complete the action. An immediate question arises in our
mind, that how these neurons work in such a great coordination. Each neuron has long projections that are
attached to another neuron forming a network of cells. These neurons secrete a
type of neurotransmitter, which is basically the chemical, transmitted to other
neurons in the form of messenger.
Motor control, motivation, lactation,
arousal, cognition and reward are some of the functions performed by Dopamine.
Neruons, whose primary neurotransmitter is dopamine are very few in number in
comparison to other neurons. These neurons are mostly confined to the central
region of the brain known as “ Substantia Nigra”. The progressive loss of these
dopaminergic neurons in the substantia Niagara region is the major cause of
motor function deficits in Parkinson’s patients. However, for many years
scientists were working hard to find out what is the possible cause of the
degeneration of the neurons in the particular region. Extensive studies on
mouse models, revealed the fact that, these dopaminergic neurons in the
substantia nigra region of the brain are very sensitive as compared to their
other counterparts in different region. When there is the strong accumulation
of certain toxic proteins known as “Synovial Proteins flakes”, these neurons
will react with the immediate sparking of electrical impulses. As a result of
high stress and oxidative response of electrical impulses, these neurons die to
degenerate.
Currently, there is no cure for
Parkinson’s disease, except for some drugs or intravenous dopamine injections,
which can slightly ease symptoms associated with the disorder, but no one can
either reverse the pathophysiology or even slow down the progression of
disorder. Stem cell treatment has the solution for Parkinson’s. Recent
development in stem cell conversion into neurons or dopamine producing cells,
have justified, the assumptions that stem cell treatment can be effective in
treating patients with Parkinson’s
diseases.
Stem cells are the mother cells of
the body, which are able to give rise to many new cells if directed in the
proper channel. These stem cells, thus can even give rise to neurons, or
dopamine producing cells, which are the prerequisites to treat Parkinson’s
disorder. These stem cells can be isolated from bone marrow or adipose tissue,
which are known to be the richest sources of stem cells and can be put back
into the targeted area of the body, after minimum manipulation in the
laboratory. Autologous stem cell treatments are thus a very safe, efficient
method, posing no risk to the patient.
