Static Caravan Holiday Home Versus Tourer Caravan – Which Should You Buy?

Caravanning holidays are becoming increasingly popular in Australia, particularly with the cost of hotels and even flights on the rise. Many people struggle, however, to decide whether buying a tourer caravan or a static one is the best choice. This is why we have put together a list of advantages and disadvantages for each option – hopefully it makes your decision a little easier!

Tourer Caravans

This is the name given to the caravans that you hook up to the back of your car and tow with you wherever you want to go.

·         Freedom – The fact that you take these vans with you means that you have the freedom to travel wherever you want, from spots close to home to the other side of Australia, without having to worry about finding accommodation once you arrive.

·         Diversity – You will receive a more diverse caravanning experience, as you can choose to stay in the country, at the beach or in a National Park somewhere. You could even stay close to the big cities! All kinds of holiday will be covered.

·         Affordability – When you look at the costs over the long term, these vans are actually quite affordable. After the initial purchase cost (which will depend on how much luxury you want), all you will really need to pay for is insurance and site fees upon arrival.

·         Flexibility – These vans also offer you maximum flexibility, as you’ll have the ability to try different parks. If you happen to visit the same location twice, for example, and weren’t wrapt with the park you stayed in last time, book in somewhere else.

Static Caravans

This is the name given to the caravans that remain permanently onsite, which you travel to whenever you want to go on holidays.

·         Convenience – When you have a static van, you’ll be able to keep all your caravanning possessions in it without worrying about how much they weigh or needing to move them into the house when you return home. All you need to do is unlock the door.

·         Subletting – One of the biggest benefits of static vans is that you have the option to sublet it whenever you’re not using it. Not only is it a nice offer for family and friends, it can help you cover some of the associated costs if you advertise on Stayz and the like

·         Petrol Costs – You’ll find that your fuel costs are significantly lower with a static van. When you tow around a tourer caravan, the extra weight increases the amount of fuel you go through – in today’s age of exorbitant fuel costs, this can be a real problem.

·         Heating & Cooling – These days, most static vans can be fitted with heaters and air conditioners to keep you as comfortable as possible during your stay. These appliances use a lot of electricity, so trying to run them off a generator is near impossible.

As you can see, there are a number of advantages to both tourer caravans and static ones – at the end of the day, the choice of which will best meet your needs is a completely personal one. If you have a favourite spot that you like to visit regularly, a static caravan could be perfect for you. If you prefer to stay somewhere new all the time, a tourer one might be preferable.
